Mani Hernandez expects his Presentation girls to win the title this winter in the West Catholic Athletic League--and so do the coaches and players at both Sacred Hearts.
The Panthers outscored opponents 22-1 in three league games last week. The first of the three was a tight 2-1 win over powerhouse St. Francis. The next two came pretty easily--9-0 over Sacred Heart Cathedral and 11-0 over Sacred Heart Prep.
Nicole Moyen scored off an Aubrey Ellzey assist and Christina Siadat knocked in an unassisted goal to lead the Panthers to the close win over the Lancers. Then things started to get easy.
Taylor Numann drilled three goals and Siadat, Danielle Alongi, Nicole Butler, Nicole Nigos, Jessica Mason and Amanda Brandt added one each to lead the Panthers to the 9-0 win. Mason and Butler added two assists apiece, and Alongi had one.
Moyen was the offensive leader with three goals and two assists in the 11-0 victory. Jennifer Tuttle added two goals in the win.
Nigos, Alongi, Brandt, Ellzey, Samantha Kountz-Edwards and Angela Nunez also scored for the Panthers. Ellzey led the way with three assists, and Numan, Kountz-Edwards, Nigos, Alongi and Siadat had one each.
The three wins helped the Panthers improve to 4-0 in league play and to 6-1 for the year. Presentation was to host St. Ignatius on Jan. 14 and will entertain Valley Christian on Jan. 16, 3 p.m., at Butcher Park in San Jose. The Panthers will visit Notre DameBelmont on Jan. 18, 11 a.m.
Boys soccer
Alex Peña came through with a goal and an assist to lead the Willow Glen boys soccer team to a 3-2 win over Santa Teresa last week in the Mt. Hamilton Division of the Blossom Valley Athletic League (BVAL).
The Rams, who opened the week with a 3-0 loss to Leigh, scored three second-half goals to top the Saints on Thursday.
Peña scored off an assist from Nathan Tom, then assisted Fabian Mbawa on Willow Glen's second goal. Gilbert Lozoya knocked in an unassisted goal later in the game to help the Rams clinch the win.
Willow Glen is now 1-1 in the division and 4-4 for the year. The Rams were to host Andrew Hill in league play on Jan. 14 and will visit Pioneer for a key game on Jan. 16, 3:15 p.m.
Boys basketball
Justin Johnson, Will Howsman and Keith Doleshel each put up big numbers in back-to-back games to lead the Willow Glen boys basketball team to a pair of wins last week in the West Valley Division of the BVAL.
Howsman poured in 32 points in two games, Johnson had 30 and Doleshel hit 27 to lead the Rams to wins over James Lick and Silver Creek.
Howsman buried 19 points and Johnson hit 18 to lead the Rams to a 78-61 win over Silver Creek. Doleshel joined the two in double figures with 14 points, and Steve Rebagliati chipped in with 16.
Max Courd added six points for the Rams, Doug Dionne hit three and Justin Ble and Rich Salas had one apiece.
Earlier in the week, Howsman and Doleshel pitched in 13 points apiece and Johnson had 12 in a 45-42 win over Lick. Courd added six to the cause, and Rebagliati hit two. Johnson and Courd each popped three-pointers in the win.
Willow Glen jumped out to a 2-0 league start with the two wins, and the Rams are now 3-9 for the year.
Girls basketball
The Willow Glen girls split their first two games of the league season, pounding Lick 47-26 but losing 32-27 to Andrew Hill.
Candace Gallegos hit three threes among her six field goals to lead all Ram scorers with 15 points. Diana Schnabel and Edna Sison chipped in with seven points apiece, and each one popped a three.
Sequeena Holmes and Kiley McKown supported with six points apiece in the win. Mikka Dixon, Crystal Salazar and Brook Cook had two points each.
The Rams, 1-1 in league play and 8-4 for the year, lost to Hill later in the week despite a 10-point effort by Maja Johnson. Salazar hit eight points, Holmes four, Dixon and Sison two each and Cook one.
Willow Glen will try to return to its winning ways this week. The Rams were to host San Jose Academy on Jan. 14, and they will visit Yerba Buena on Jan. 16 and Overfelt on Jan. 17 for a pair of 7 p.m. games.
Over at Presentation, the Panthers won twice last week--beating Valley Christian 54-45 and Sacred Heart Cathedral 55-52--to improve to 2-0 in the West Catholic Athletic League and to 12-2 for the year.
Katie Mello and Nicole Yarwasky shared game-high honors for the Panthers in the two wins.
Mello went for 19 points, including three three-pointers, in Presentation's 54-45 win over Valley Christian. Yarwasky joined Mello in double digits with 16 points, Kelly Bertoldo and Kirian Ishizaki hit six points apiece, Hayley Farb added three and Arianna Corona and Jackie Murray hit two each. Ishizaki also popped a three.
Yarwasky buried 23 points to lead the Panthers to the win over Sacred Heart. Bertoldo finished in twin figures with 10 points, Farb had seven, Corona and Ishizaki hit six apiece and Mello had three.
The Panthers, now 2-0 in league play and 12-2 for the year, were to visit Mitty on Jan. 14 before heading to St. Ignatius on Jan. 17 and hosting Notre DameBelmont on Jan. 18 in a pair of 7:30 p.m. games.
Wrestling
Willow Glen slipped to 0-2 in Mt. Hamilton Division competition last week after a 46-26 loss to Overfelt. A pair of forfeits and four first-round pins by Overfelt proved costly for the Rams.
Joel Drescher won by fall in the first round at 215 pounds for Willow Glen, and Ricardo Hernandez pinned in the second round at 145. Sam Olivas won 4-0 at 125, Amir Faraj-Perry won 11-0 at 275 and Jason Grossman won by forfeit at 152.
