This spring the Willow Glen Middle School (WGMS) campus will be covered with yellow and red--the school's colors.

That's because on Jan. 9 the students and administration participated in the school's first "Bulb-A-Thon," planting yellow daffodils and red tulips throughout the campus.

It all started when the office of San Jose District 6 City Councilman Ken Yeager donated 1,000 daffodil bulbs to the school. The school purchased an additional 1,000 daffodils and 500 tulip bulbs, and with the help of landscaper Patty Hughes, students spent one class period busily planting. Each classroom was assigned one of six designated planting areas on campus, and each student planted two daffodil or tulip bulbs.

"All the bulbs have been planted and we're just waiting for them to sprout," says Mike Weir, an assistant principal at the school.

And the children weren't the only ones getting their hands dirty. San Jose Unified School District Superintendent Linda Murray and Supervisor of Secondary Education Bonnie Piche joined Yeager and the students in the planting event.

"The Bulb-A-Thon is an event we are putting on to encourage ownership, pride and connection to our school for our students," says teacher Erin McGee.

Willow Glen's PTA volunteer coordinator, Debbie Bishop, also rounded up parent volunteers to assist with the planting. Parents Carrie Maietta and Judy Findeisen handled the planning, organization and ground preparation.
