Youth volleyball
Sign-ups are now being accepted for an indoor volleyball league for boys and girls ages 814 at the First Covenant Church, 790 Coe Ave. The season runs Feb. 11 through April 1 and will include Tuesday evening practices and clinics and Saturday morning matches.

Strikers tryouts
The West Valley Strikers, a boys Class 1 soccer team, will hold tryouts on Feb. 8 and 9 for the fall 2003 season. Boys born after August of 1990 are eligible. For more information, call Shannon Impey at 408.353.2461.
Coaches honored
Current coaches Dean Honma of Cupertino and Rodney Carlson of Prospect and retired coaches Gary Brinck of Westmont and Lynn Dyche of Oak Grove were among those recognized by the Central Coast Section (CCS) at the end of the fall sports season.
Honma, a girls field hockey coach for the Pioneers, and Carlson, a girls volleyball coach for the Panthers, were among the winners of the 2002 CCS Fall Sports Honor Coaches Awards. Other honor coaches included Carlos Saldivar, James Lick cross country coach; Dan Navarro, Mountain View football coach; Ben Neveras, Yerba Buena girls tennis coach; and Deke Rowell, Los Altos boys water polo coach.
Brinck and Dyche joined Terri Sonniksen of Notre DameSalinas as winners of CCS Distinguished Service Awards.
Brinck, a Los Gatos resident, recently retired from his teaching position at Westmont. He had been a teacher and coach at the school since 1963 and was the Westmont athletic director for 32 years. He led his Westmont basketball teams to seven league titles and two CCS championships while running up 403 victories over 38 years of coaching.
Dyche, a Willow Glen resident, has been involved with the CCS for 35 years as a teacher and wrestling coach at Andrew Hill, Oak Grove and Santa Teresa high schools, as the athletic director for 15 years at Oak Grove and as a wrestling official. He has served as the director of the state high school wrestling tournament five times.
