League champion Adrian Morales will lead a solid contingent of Willow Glen wrestlers to the Central Coast Section championships Feb. 2122 at Independence.
Morales finished first at 173 pounds at the Blossom Valley Athletic League finals and is one of eight Rams to qualify for the CCS championships.
"We could be in the top 10 if everything goes right," said Willow Glen coach Phil Luna, who figures Morales for a top-three finish in his division, which would qualify him for the state tournament.
Morales led the Rams to a team fourth at the league finals. Supporting with seconds were Sam Olivas (127), Ricardo Hernandez (147), Daniel Cousino (162) and Amir Faraj-Perry (217). Jason Grossman was third at 154, and Rueben Rodriguez was fourth at 132 to qualify for the CCS championships.
Eugene Martinez missed the tournament because of an injury but challenged at 137 pounds. He won his match to earn a CCS berth.
"Eugene is pretty healthy now, and we're hoping that Amir is ready to go," said Luna, referring to a shoulder injury Faraj-Perry suffered in the league title match.
"I'm excited—the most excited I've been in all my years here," added Luna. "The biggest thing at CCS is the draw—getting the right draw at the right time."
