Soccer playoffs

The Presentation girls soccer team played for one championship last weekend; now they hope to play for another.

The Panthers made it to the West Catholic Athletic League title game before losing a tough 6-1 decision to Notre DameBelmont on Saturday.

But the loss didn't end the season for Presentation. The Panthers will now advance to the Central Coast Section Division II playoffs.

Presentation takes a 12-4-4 season record into the playoffs. The Panthers are seeded No. 4 in the tournament and have earned a first-round bye.

Presentation will open the playoffs on Feb. 22, 2 p.m., at Seaside against the North Monterey County (10-5-1, No. 12)Soquel (10-6, No. 5) first-round winner. The division semifinals are Feb. 19, 4:30 p.m., at Wilcox with the championship game March 1, 10 a.m., at Valley Christian.

Presentation earned its place in the league championship game with a 2-1 overtime win over St. Francis. Amanda Brandt knocked in a first-half goal off a Jennifer Tuttle assist, but the Lancers also scored in the first half.

After a scoreless second half, the clubs headed into overtime locked in a 1-1 tie. Danielle Alongi broke the tie, though, when she scored off a Brandt assist.

Notre Dame beat Mitty 2-1 the same day to earn a place in the title game, then blasted the Panthers 6-1 in the finals. Freshman Samantha Edwards-Kountz scored the lone goal in the loss.

In other local soccer action last week, the Willow Glen girls dropped a 6-2 nod to Oak Grove to wrap up their league season.

The Willow Glen boys lost twice in the Mt. Hamilton Division, falling 3-0 to unbeaten Leland and 4-2 to Overfelt.

Alex Pena scored off an assist from Jairo Arreola, and Sal Formegan scored an unassisted goal for the Rams.

Willow Glen finished the year 2-9-1 in the division and 7-9-1 for the year.
