Musical performances are tailor-made for families

In the mood for a surreal escape from Little League practice and Brownie meetings this weekend? Two vastly different live performances offer youngsters and adults a rare chance to lose themselves in make-believe and novelty music.

American Family Theater presents Alice in Wonderland March 8 at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. at Montalvo's Carriage House Theatre. An original musical adaptation of the Lewis Carroll book, Alice in Wonderland features an all-adult professional cast bringing to life the familiar characters of young Alice, the perpetually late White Rabbit, and of course, the cool and slightly suspicious Cheshire Cat. The approximately one-hour show is suitable for children of all ages and provides a magical getaway down a rabbit hole and into the world of wild tea parties and wacky croquet matches. Tickets are $8 for children and $16 for adults. For information, visit www.villamontalvo.org.

Toe Tapping at Smokey Joe's

Those in the mood for a little toe tapping and nostalgia might try Children's Musical Theater San Jose's interpretation of Smokey Joe's Cafe. This Broadway revue could be a child's first introduction to Mom and Dad's favorite songs as this high-energy production celebrates the songwriter pioneers of rock & roll. Mike Stoller and Jerry Leiber wrote songs made famous by Elvis Presley, the Coasters and the Drifters, to name a few. All of which may require a brief tutorial of music history when trotting the youngsters down to the Montgomery Theater.

Smokey Joe's Cafe is presented by CMT's Mainstage, featuring the theater group's teenage performers singing pop hits like "Jailhouse Rock," "Love Potion No. 9" and "Hound Dog."

Capturing the spirit of an innocent American era, the show reflects on the years between 1958 and 1963. Changing hairstyles, music and wardrobe represent a significant period of pop culture modeled by classic looks, such as the beehive and pompadour hairstyles and dance styles like the Mashed Potato and the Twist. All of which unfolds on top of a jukebox with records spinning on a revolving stage.

Smokey Joe's Cafe runs March 716 at the Montgomery Theater in downtown San Jose. Tickets are $12 for children and $18 for adults. Call 408.288.5437 or visit www.sjcmt.com for tickets.
