New park's ungated opening is a concern

I am writing in response to the March 5 Willow Glen Resident article on Hummingbird Park.

As a mother of twin 2-year olds, I need to express my deep concern about a safety issue regarding the park. This "toddler" park is not completely fenced in. The article discusses at length the dangerous, busy intersection but failed to address that the fence has a gaping, ungated opening on Fisk Avenue.

I spoke with three other parents at the park who expressed similar concerns that their children could easily run out directly onto the street, unnoticed by even the most careful of parents.

While it is a great space to run and play--even though there are no steps up to the slide for little ones--I shudder to think about what could happen. While we were there, parks groundskeepers happened to stop by, and they kindly listened to my concerns and agreed that the city needs to do something to rectify this potential hazard. A few more feet of fence and a simple gate would work well.
