Elementary school students paint mural
Willow Glen Elementary School has a colorful new mural in its multipurpose room/cafeteria that can be seen by passersby on Lincoln Avenue.
Marylea Adams, a local artist and the mother of a child at the school, designed and helped paint the mural on March 15 with the assistance of many third-, fourth- and fifth-grade students. A school committee selected the theme—friendship, play and kids, says Parent-Teacher Association President Karen Potts. The Friendship Mural, which depicts children playing, is painted in all different shades of lavender, pink and orange. It revolves around the ideas of friendship, peace and working together.
"Typically murals are of nature but this one is funky and fun," Potts says. "We see this as not only beneficial to our kids but as public art for Willow Glen. It reflects the racial diversity at our school and in our community."
The public art project, sponsored and funded by the PTA, is intended to be a part of the school's decor for the next five years. After that time the next generation of students can create a new painting, Potts says.
