Dance Week offers styles from classic ballet to hip-hop
By Estelle Pagnoux
National Dance Week leaps into the South Bay April 28 to May 4. For those who have always dreamed of dancing with the professionals or would simply like to see the inner workings of professional choreography and rehearsal, Dance Week has something for everyone.

The weeklong series of events offers more than 200 free activities to the public throughout the Bay Area every year. San Jose will play host to 30 events, including outdoor dance festivals, beginner and master classes, open rehearsals, lecture demonstrations and performances, all open to the public.

Children and adults can participate in, learn or just observe a wide range of movement styles. While dance styles like jazz, tango, ballet, modern and hip-hop are expected to be popular attractions for those already adept to dancing, yoga and Pilates classes are also offered as an introduction to movement.

Focused on offering 'something for everyone,' Dance Week organizers are quick to point out the many free lectures and performances offered throughout the 10-day dance-fest. Lectures on Chinese classical dance, questions and answers from noted choreographers and open houses are planned in addition to open classes with professional dance troupes.

The following are highlights of the week's activities. Some events require advance registration. For a complete listing of South Bay Celebrates National Dance Week events go to www.bacndw.org.
