Rams, Chargers will meet again
By Dick Sparrer
The last time the Willow Glen and Leland baseball teams collided in a Blossom Valley Athletic League Mt. Hamilton Division game, the Rams pulled off an upset with a win over the Chargers.

Well, Willow Glen skipper Brad Sanfilippo is hoping for more of the same this week.

The Rams will host the Chargers at 3:30 p.m. on April 30 when the clubs return to league play following spring break. Willow Glen will close out the week on the road at Santa Teresa on May 2, 3:30 p.m.

Willow Glen spent much of the school vacation up at Valley Christian High School playing in the annual Crown Classic. The Rams lost 7-5 to Bellarmine in the tourney quarterfinals, but they came back to beat Santa Clara 10-2 in a consolation game.

Doug Dionne went the distance to toss a six-hitter for the Rams against the Bruins. He struck out seven in the win and allowed just single runs in the second and third.

Willow Glen had already opened up a big lead before Santa Clara scored its first run. The Rams rallied for seven runs in the first and then, after the Bruins scored in the top of the second, answered with another run in the home half of the inning.

Santa Clara scored again in the third, but the Rams added two in the bottom of the third to make it 10-2. That would stand up for the win.

Jim Garcia was the offensive star for the Rams with a double and a triple to drive in four runs. Dionne singled and doubled in the win and Justin Jeffrey doubled.

Willow Glen had opened the week with a 7-5 loss to Bellarmine. Chris Hobbs singled and doubled to lead a six-hit effort for the Rams.

Softball loss

The Willow Glen girls softball team lost its only game last week, falling 5-1 to Pioneer in non-league test.

Marina Mendez doubled, but Willow Glen could manage just three hits in the game. The Rams scored their only run of the day in the sixth, but the Mustangs had already built up a 4-0 lead, then answered Willow Glen's run by scoring in the bottom of the sixth.

The Rams return to league play this week when they entertain Prospect on April 30, 3:30 p.m. They hit the road on May 2 for a 3:30 p.m. league game at Independence High School.

Grelli stars

Melissa Grelli of Presentation won two events last week at the Central Coast Section Top 8 meet held on the Los Gatos track.

Grelli raced to a win in the 1,600 meters with a time of 4:57.60 and came back to win the 3,200-meter run in 10:48.13.

Isabel De La Fuente supported with a second-place finish in the discus for the Panthers with a heave of 115-1, and Mandy Williams was third in the 800 in 2:19.02 for Presentation.

The three Panthers placed a week earlier at the HamptonPhillips Classic held at San Jose City College.

Grelli was second in the 1,600 in 5:01.12, De La Fuente was third in the discus at 112-3 and Williams was sixth in the 800 meters in 2:20.07.

Presentation was coming off of an 80-51 West Catholic Athletic League win over Valley Christian in a dual meet.

Rams run to wins

Cristina Diaz won three events to lead the Willow Glen girls track team to a 72-54 win over Santa Teresa. The Rams improved to 5-0 in the Santa Teresa Division dual meet season with the win.

In boys action the same day, the Rams pushed their record to 5-0 with a 67-60 win over Santa Teresa. Brian Fickes and Nate Oxsen were each double winners for the Rams.

Diaz was first in the 1,600 meters in 5:51.5, the 800 in 2:32.9 and the 3,200 in 13:16.8 to lead the Willow Glen girls to the big win.
