New symphony wraps up its season with a rousing finish
By Heather Zimmerman
"Tea for Two" may be the name of Symphony San Jose Silicon Valley's season finale program, but the scrumptious offerings served up June 7 at the San Jose Center for the Performing Arts won't have a thing to do with crumpets and a cup of Darjeeling.

The program brings Symphony San Jose Silicon Valley's first season to a rousing finish, with the promise of many more good things to come for the organization's second season.

Accordingly for such an auspicious finale, there's lots of celebration and lots of drama, from the effervescent idyll of Smetana's The Moldau to Wagner's opera The Flying Dutchman, plus two concertos, each one featuring a stellar soloist from Symphony San Jose Silicon Valley. Concertmaster Robin Mayforth will be featured in Barber's Violin Concerto and the symphony's principal clarinetist Michael Corner will solo in Copland's Clarinet Concerto.

A Juilliard graduate, violinist Mayforth has served as concertmaster for festivals and orchestras around the country. She was the founding second violinist of the renowned Lark Quartet, which has toured extensively and garnered numerous international awards. Mayforth has taught on the faculties of Stanford and Santa Clara universities.

Local audiences have heard Corner's performances in a variety of venues in addition to Symphony San Jose Silicon Valley. The clarinetist performs regularly as a theater musician with American Musical Theatre of San Jose, and recently he appeared as principal clarinetist for Baz Luhrmann's retooling of Puccini's La Bohème. He has played as a chamber musician with a number of local groups, including the San Jose Chamber Music Society. Corner also performs as a jazz musician at local venues such as Yoshi's and Kimball's.

The guest conductor for Tea for Two will be Patrick Flynn, who has lent his talents to everything from opera to film. Flynn has collaborated with Mikhail Baryshnikov for the Met and conducted for Rudolph Nureyev. He has conducted for, among others, the Paris Opera, the BBC Philharmonic, the BBC Concert Orchestra and the Australian Opera at the Sydney Opera House. Flynn was composer Andrew Lloyd Webber's personal choice to conduct the first concert performances of Jesus Christ Superstar. He recently conducted for Pinchas Zukerman for his performance with the Madison Symphony Orchestra.

Symphony San Jose Silicon Valley performs June 7 at the San Jose Center for the Performing Arts, 255 Almaden Blvd., San Jose. Tickets are $25$68. For more information, call 408.288.2800 or visit www.symphonysanjose.org.
