Symphonic Chinese Ballet offers evening of dance
By Heather Zimmerman
Centuries of history and culture merge with contemporary and traditional dance for a program of timeless music and dance from China, and a few other places in the world. The performance, titled "Symphonic Chinese Ballet," will feature dancers from the Chinese Performing Artists of America, a locally based arts organization.

Many of these performers were professionally trained in China in a variety of Chinese dance styles. Ballet San Jose Silicon Valley Orchestra, conducted by Rui Zhang, will accompany the dancers.

The program will include the "Yellow River" piano concerto and dance suite, a contemporary dance piece that will feature piano soloist Dr. Jonathan Jou, as well as some dancers from Ballet San Jose Silicon Valley.

"Butterfly Lovers" proves love really might be eternal: The piece adapts a love story more than 2,000 years old into a dramatic dance piece, which is set to a violin concerto performed by violinist Ryan Chen.

Other works on the program include "Moonlight Reflecting on Twin Springs," another piece set to violin, and "Fisherman's Evening Song," which spotlights the konghou, an ancient type of harp which, after centuries of near-obscurity, was rediscovered and revived in the 20th century. Junzhi Cui, considered one of the foremost masters of the Konghou, will impress audiences with the instrument's unique sound.

Lending a multinational flavor to the dance concert will be performances of Rachmaninoff's "Prelude and Etude" and "Zigeunerweisen," which despite a decidedly German-sounding name, was written by Spanish composer Pablo de Sarasate.

Symphonic Chinese Ballet will be presented June 28, 8 p.m. at the San Jose Center for the Performing Arts, 255 Almaden Blvd., San Jose. Tickets are $25$100. For more information, call 408.973.8276 or 408.873.8576.
