The Yankees of the Lincoln Glen Little League knew the District 12 Junior Division Tournament of Champions title game against the Yankees of Branham Hills would be a close one, especially considering it took over a month to crown the victor in their last showdown.

The teams played to a 7-7 tie early in the regular season and since the game ran so late, it had to be continued on a make-up date a month later. Finally, the Branham Hills Yankees triumphed 11-10 in nine innings—leaving Lincoln Glen with some unsettled business to take care of in the rematch.

Unlike the regular season game, the title game turned out to be very low scoring. Nevertheless, Lincoln Glen received its revenge with a solid 2-0 victory to capture the TOC title.

"The Branham Hills Yankees were the toughest team we faced," said Lincoln Glen coach Peter O'Shaughnessy. "But this was the best team effort I've ever seen. Every player contributed in the winning effort. My hat's off to everyone because each kid made a super play or had a great at-bat."

Starter Jeff Alves and closer Kyle Lundquist combined for a four-hit shutout. Meanwhile, Marcos Garces knocked in both Lincoln Glen runs (one in the first inning and one in the seventh) to provide the offensive cushion.

The L.G. Yankees reached the finals by defeating the Cambrian Park Tigers 13-4 and the Branham Hills Giants 6-0. Branham Hills' Yankees advanced with a 5-4 victory over the Almaden Angels and 3-0 victory over the Almaden Twins.

"We played the last two games without committing an error," said O'Shaughnessy, "and that was the difference for us winning the championship."

The L.G. Yankees finished the regular season with a 14-4 record, despite dropping their first two out of three games.

Other contributing players over the course of the season for the Lincoln Glen Yankees included Steven Skavdahl, Taylor Valenzuela, Michael Roseland, Daniel O'Shaughnessy, Ross Giordano, Frank Dali, Aaron Bordonave, Dan Goldberg, Kevin McMinn and Jeremy Diaz.

"They worked harder than any team I've ever managed," said O'Shaughnessy, "and it truly paid off with the championship."

Lincoln Glen's senior club, J.J. Albanese, made it to the finals of the District 12 TOC, only to lose a 6-5 heartbreaker to the Almaden Yankees.

Albanese opened the tournament with a rousing 12-1 win over Willow Glen, then pounded the Branham Hills Giants 25-4 to get into the championship game.

Almaden won a pair of close decisions over teams from the Cambrian Park Little League to get to the finals, beating the Twins 8-5 and edging the Reds 8-7.

Lincoln Glen entered two teams in the District 12 13-year-old all-star tournament, but one was eliminated in the first round 9-6 by Branham Hills.

The District 12 senior all-star tournament begins July 5 when Willow Glen and Branham Hills collide at 10 a.m. at the Cambrian Park field. Lincoln Glen opens the tourney with a 1 p.m. game that day against host Cambrian Park.
