The District 12 Little League major division all-star tournament opened with more of a whiff than a bang when Los Gatos played Lincoln Glen on July 5 in the first game of pool play. Two fine pitching performances by Steve Zavodnick and Kevin Glomb kept the scoring low, and Los Gatos used four runs on five hits to come up with the 4-0 victory.
Zavodnick went the distance for the complete game shutout, surrendering just two hits and striking out eight. Glomb gave up one hit and struck out three while facing the minimum number of batters for the first three innings.
"You have to give [Glomb] credit," said Los Gatos manager Dan Kropp. "He threw a great three innings."
In the fourth inning, the Los Gatos hitters came alive. Leadoff hitter Nate Burke started the rally after being hit by a pitch. With Burke on first and nobody out, Los Gatos was in the same situation it had faced in the first inning. In the first, Gatos bunted a ball in the air to cue a double play, so this time Kropp decided to have his hitters swing away instead of trying to sacrifice Burke over.
"I had memories of what happened in the first," said Kropp. "So instead of playing little ball, we decided to go for the big inning. And it worked for us."
With one out, Zavodnick ripped a double down the third base line. Kiko Alonso followed with a single up the middle to give Los Gatos its first run of the game. Gatos took a 2-0 lead when Zavodnick came home on Jake Scallion's sacrifice fly.
Los Gatos then added two more runs in the fifth inning to close out the scoring. Kyle Johnson led off with a walk, and Brett Litle beat out a slow chopper to the pitcher for an infield hit. Johnson later scored on a hard hit ball by Chris Bitter that the Lincoln Glen second baseman could not handle. Alonso then knocked in Litle with a line drive double that short-hopped the centerfield wall.
Alonso led the Los Gatos offense with three hits and two RBIs. Nick Mingione reached base twice (single and walk) for Lincoln Glen, and Phil Marrone turned in the team's only other hit.
"[Zavodnick] was on today," said Kropp, "and I thought Brett Litle and Colin Chapman's defense was excellent."
Lincoln Glen's defense also turned in several nice plays. In addition to the double play on the popped up bunt in the first inning, Lincoln Glen turned in another double play the next inning when first baseman Taylor Crawford snagged Nick Hirschman's line drive and stepped on first to erase another Los Gatos rally.
Lincoln Glen and Los Gatos will play three more games in their pool to determine which two teams will advance to the semi-finals on July 15. Lincoln Glen was to play Saratoga on Monday July 7, and will face Quito on July 10, 5:30 p.m., and Almaden on July 12, 1 p.m., at Los Gatos
Willow Glen played Union and Cambrian Park and will face American on July 10, 5:30 p.m., and Branham Hills on July 12, 10 a.m., in the other pool at Cambrian Park.
