Hewitt hits for the cycle in win
By Dick Sparrer
Hitting for the cycle is probably the most difficult offensive feat in baseball. But Bryan Hewitt pulled it off on July 20, and because of it the Lincoln Glen Little League Big League all-stars rolled to a 16-4 victory over Brentwood-Oakley in the Division 2 tournament.

Hewitt singled, doubled, tripled and homered to drive in seven runs for Lincoln Glen in the second round of the divisional tournament.

Lincoln Glen had won the District 12 and Section 5 championships to earn the trip to divisionals. The locals lost a 3-2 heartbreaker to Sacramento in the first round of the tourney, but came back with the lopsided win on Sunday.

Hewitt, who starred at Bellarmine last spring, led the offensive attack for Lincoln Glen with his four hits. He also scored two runs and stole a base.

Michael Glomb, also from Bellarmine, singled, doubled and homered in the win. Doug Dionne (Willow Glen) had three hits to drive in three runs and Scott Righetti (Pioneer) doubled twice and singled to knock in two.

Adam Wright (Valley Christian) singled and scored three runs in the win and Andrew Kawahara (Bellarmine) doubled in a pair of runs.

Dionne was the winning pitcher for Lincoln Glen, going the distance to toss a 7-hitter. He struck out five and walked four.

It was a seesaw battle until the fourth when Lincoln Glen started to pull away. Oakley scored two in the first, but Hewitt's three-run double in the bottom of the inning gave the locals the lead. Casey Furtado (Valley Christian) walked, Mike Wittmayer (Valley Christian) was hit by a pitch and Wright walked before Hewitt unloaded.

Oakley scored two more to lead 4-3 after two, but Glomb tied it in the third with a solo homer to center.

Lincoln Glen took control of the game in the fourth. Dionne singled and stole second, Wright walked and Hewitt blasted a 3-run homer to right.

The locals added a run in the fifth. Justin Jeffrey (Willow Glen) walked and gave way to pinch runner Kawahara, who stole second. Dionne followed with a run-scoring single.

Lincoln Glen broke the game open with eight runs in the sixth. Doubles by Righetti, Kawahara and Hewitt keyed the rally.

A game earlier, Lincoln Glen lost 3-2 to Sacramento in the tourney opener. Glomb singled and doubled and Wittmayer had two hits for the locals.

Lincoln Glen notched a 13-3 record to win the District 12 championship and advance to the sectionals. The locals handled Branham Hills 10-2, Milpitas 6-4 and Cupertino American 6-5 and 11-0 to win the Section 5 crown.

Andy Alves (Bellarmine) flipped a 1-hit shutout in the sectional title game against Cupertino. He struck out six on his way to notching his fifth complete game of the season.

Glomb doubled and tripled to drive in three runs, John Gibilisco (Willow Glen) singled and doubled and Dionne had two hits in the win. Hewitt ripped a triple, Jeffrey doubled in two runs and Wittmayer and Furtado each singled.

A nine-run rally in the third inning helped Lincoln Glen clinch the title.

Alves tossed a complete game, fanning five, to lead the locals to a 10-2 win over Branham Hills in the tourney opener.

Glomb had three hits to lead the offense. Righetti doubled twice and Dionne had two hits.

Righetti singled and doubled and was the winning pitcher for Lincoln Glen in a tight 6-4 victory over Milpitas. Dusty Yoder (Valley Christian) tossed two strong innings of relief and Dionne came on to get the save.

Gibilisco and Robby Cetinich (Bellarmine) had two hits apiece in the win.

Kawahara doubled twice and Furtado singled and doubled to lead the local Big Leaguers to a 6-5 win over Cupertino American. Jeffrey and Dionne belted two hits apiece and Yoder picked up the mound win with three-plus innings of relief.

Patrick Carter (Bellarmine) and Colin Frohlich are other members of the Lincoln Glen team. Larry Schaffer is the manager and his coaches are Mike Harrington, Mike Dorsa and Dave Wittmayer.
