Cinequest and POPULUS Presents are bringing new meaning to the term "event movie," and it has nothing to do with the newest blockbuster at the cineplex.
The organizations are co-hosting Cinema San Pedro, a free weekly series of films, which will be screened outdoors, giving audiences a chance to take in some great movies while enjoying warm summer nights. The series offers a variety of films, from classic to camp. But this al fresco film festival includes some extras.
Each evening, audiences will also get treated to screenings of favorite Cinequest Maverick short films, as well as entertainment featuring a theme geared to each movie—and organizers are promising some special surprises for that.
Films will be shown every Wednesday night through Sept. 3 in the San Pedro Square area of downtown San Jose. Next up, on Aug. 6, is Iron Monkey, a 1993 martial arts movie featuring fight choreography by Yuen Wo Ping, who became known in the United States for his elegant work on The Matrix and Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon. Upcoming on the schedule: the over-the-top classic Whatever Happened to Baby Jane? (Aug. 13); Trekkies (Aug. 20), a humorous documentary about avid Star Trek fans; the oft-quoted and much-loved comedy Monty Python and the Holy Grail (Aug. 27); and John Waters' cult hit Hairspray (Sept. 3).
Moviegoers should bring their own lawn chairs for seating but are asked to leave their own munchies and drinks at home (no outside food or drink allowed). A concessions stand will sell candy, popcorn and beverages, including wine and beer.
