The San Jose Jazz Society kicked off its 14th annual festival Aug. 7 with a reception and concert at Santana Row. Festival headliner Nnenna Freelon and the Count Basie Band performed. The Jazz Society's Youth All-Star Combo performed at the reception in the plaza behind Hotel Valencia.

Cathedral gala preview

The Bicentennial Ball celebrating the 200th anniversary of the Cathedral Basilica of St. Joseph doesn't take place until Oct. 25, but several preview parties are bringing supporters together in anticipation of the big gala. On. July 24, Henry and Shirlee Schiro opened their Willow Glen home for a preview.
