Steve Meyberg has been working at Gunther's Restaurant and Catering since he was 5. That's part of being the owner's son.

"When I was little my dad would bring me in to the restaurant and I would wipe down chairs or drag a broom across the floor," Meyberg said. "I'm not sure if I was supposed to be learning the family business or if he was just trying to keep me occupied."

Either way, Meyberg has been working for his father, Gunther Meyberg, ever since.

"I love my job. The only thing I would rather do than this is to be a pilot," Meyberg said.

Gunther's has been a fixture of Willow Glen since 1971.

"We've seen people come and go as well as businesses. Luckily we've been one of the ones who have been able to stay," Meyberg said.

Gunther's does plan to add some new menu items soon.

"There are so many of our customers who are on the Atkins diet. We wanted to be able to accommodate them, so we've been preparing items from the diet for a while now. It was such a big success that we've decided to make some regular additions to our menu from the diet," Meyberg said.

Other than that, the menu at Gunther's has stayed as dependable as the quality and service.

Breakfast at Gunther's is a sit-down meal full of American favorites.

There is the onion omelette with cheese, the three-cheese omelette, eggs with British bangers and a sirloin steak breakfast meal.

For lunch and dinner, Meyberg said, they serve everything Hof-Brau style.

"It's nicer than a regular buffet style. You get to see the food, there are specials and the smells are great," Meyberg said.

Dinners at Gunther's consist of a large selection of hot and cold sandwiches, such as pastrami, corned beef, the New Yorker, Louisiana Hot Link, chicken salad and vegetarian, to name just a few. All of Gunther's sandwiches are served on fresh bakery bread, including white, wheat, rye, pumpernickel and sourdough slices.

Gunther's also offers several salad dishes, such as seafood, cucumber and pasta seafood salads.

"Everything we serve here is fresh. It's home cooking, just on a larger scale. We've gotten really good at finding ways to keep our meals reasonably priced without cutting the quality or quantity for our customers," said Meyberg, who is also the catering director for the restaurant.

With catering an integral part of the business, Meyberg holds his entire staff to the high standards he learned while catering at the Concord Resort Hotel in the Catskills of upstate New York.

"We do a lot of catering here. We offer both small catering, where we just prepare the food, all the way to full-service catering," Meyberg said.

Gunther's has several catering packages available, including wedding and corporate packages.

"We've done lots of weddings, and they always come out great. We also do a lot of corporate places during the week and during the holiday season," Meyberg said.

Gunther's has become a very popular spot during the holiday seasons because of its takeout specials.

"There's only so much people can do when they're having big parties. We're here to help make that experience easier if possible by doing some or all of the food preparation," Meyberg said.

Gunther's is located at 1601 Meridian Ave. and is open Monday through Thursday from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m., Friday from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. and Saturday from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. The restaurant is closed on Sundays.
