Symphony Silicon Valley may be offering a concert called the "Sunset Symphony," but this performance could almost be called a pre-dawn symphony, scheduled as it is even before the sun rises on the symphony's regular season.
On Sept. 19, Symphony Silicon Valley will whet appetites for its upcoming season of six concerts with a free oceanfront concert in Half Moon Bay. Just because the season won't start until Oct. 11 doesn't mean classical music fans can't get a fix early, and in beautiful, natural surroundings to boot.
Perched oceanside on the lawn at the Ritz-Carlton Hotel in Half Moon Bay, as the sun sets, audiences will be treated to a diverse program of works featuring The Moldau by Bedrich Smetana, Gymnopedies by Erik Satie, Rossini's Overture From William Tell and Beethoven's Symphony No. 5 in C Minor.
At the baton will be guest conductor Patrick Flynn, who has worked in everything from opera to film to Broadway, and of course, symphony. Among his many wide-ranging credits: conducting for Pinchas Zukerman at the gala opening of the Madison Symphony Orchestra last season, conducting the first performances of Jesus Christ Superstar at Andrew Lloyd Webber's personal request, and serving as musical director for the California-based Inland Empire Philharmonic for the last 13 years.
The Sunset Symphony is a free concert, but VIP tables will also be available for $1,500$2,500 each, with proceeds benefiting the Greater Bay Area Make-A-Wish Foundation.
Symphony Silicon Valley presents "Sunset Symphony" on Sept. 19, 6 p.m.9 p.m., at the Ritz-Carlton Hotel, 1 Miramontes Point Road, Half Moon Bay. Free seating for 500 (VIP tables $1,500-$2,500). For more information, call 650.712.7000 or see http://www.ritzcarlton.com/resorts/half_moon_bay/.
