Brady claims NorCal lawn bowling crown
By Dick Sparrer
Ken Brady is on a roll, and because of it he'll find himself in Pinehurst, N.C., later this month to compete in the U.S. Lawn Bowling championships.

Brady, a member of the San Jose Lawn Bowls Club, recently won the Northern California Men's Singles championship and will make the trip to the East Coast in late September along with teammates Regina Banares, Larry Collaco and Oscar Collaco.

Earlier in the summer, Brady, a longtime Willow Glen resident, won the Pacific Intermountain Division singles championship for lawn bowling. He'll compete for the title of "Best Singles Bowler in the U.S." in North Carolina.

Winning the Pacific Intermountain Division title was no easy feat for Brady. He beat two members of Team USA—the nation's international team—and also had to play against the only U.S. member of the World Lawn Bowling Hall of Fame.

"In the lawn bowling world, this is a really big deal," said San Jose Lawn Bowls Club spokesman Terry E. Hause in a letter to the Resident. "It is like winning a major tournament in golf or tennis. This guy could be representing the U.S. next year internationally, and he lives in Willow Glen."

Brady competes out of the Willow Street Park Green, the home court for the San Jose Lawn Bowls Club.

"Our membership is mostly retired persons, but we have a few players that are in their early teens, a number that are in college that play only during the summer, and a few old timers, including two guys in their 90s," added Hause. "One of the best things about lawn bowling is that it is free—that is, no charge.

"We provide the bowls, the green, and all the necessary implements. All you have to do is show up, and you get into a game, regardless of your skill level. And we don't pick teams. You are randomly assigned to a game, and a position to bowl."
