Retirement dinner; events for young, old
By Dick Sparrer
A variety of activities ranging in events for the very young and the young at heart are coming up in October in the area. The San José Department of Parks, Recreation and Neighborhood Services will host two of the events—a Punt, Pass & Kick competition for youngsters and the Senior Games for the older set.

There's also a special retirement dinner planned for longtime San José City College athletic director and track and cross country coach Bert Bonanno, and a fun run in nearby Los Gatos to support the town's Community Against Substance Abuse program.

Punt, Pass, Kick

The annual Pepsi Punt, Pass & Kick competition for youngsters ages 815 (as of Dec. 31, 2003) will be held Oct. 12, beginning at 2 p.m. at San Jose PAL Stadium.

Participants will each have one punt, one pass and one kick, and scores will be determined by distance and accuracy. The winner in each age group advances to the regional championships on Oct. 18 at Jefferson High School in Daly City. The championship round will be held Nov. 2 during halftime of the San Francisco 49ersSt. Louis Rams game.

There is no entry fee, and entry forms are available at www.nflyouthfootball.com. For more information, call or email Judi Baxter at 408.369.3900 or Judibax@sonic.net.

Senior Games

The Senior Games, hosted by the City of San José Department of Parks, Recreation and Neighborhood Services Office on Aging, are coming up soon and feature competition in basketball and track and field.

Athletes ages 50 and over will compete in the 3-on-3 Basketball Tournament on Oct. 25, 9 a.m., at Mission College in Santa Clara. The event will also feature a hot shot and free throw competition. The cost is $20 per player ($10 for the hot shot and free throw competition only).

Athletes ages 40 and over are eligible for the track and field meet to be held Nov. 2, 9 a.m., at Los Gatos High School. The $20 entry fee includes all events.

The registration deadline is Oct. 17 for basketball and Oct. 24 for track and field. For more information, call 408.297.0247.

Bonanno retires

A coaching career than spans nearly 40 years will come to an end this year as San Jose City College athletic director Bert Bonanno announces his retirement. The longtime cross country and track and field coach for the Jaguars will be honored at a retirement dinner on Oct. 10 at Lou's Village in San Jose.

Bonanno was an assistant coach at San José State University before taking over at San Jose City, where his teams were consistently among the best in the state.

The Oct. 10 dinner begins with a no-host bar at 6 p.m. followed by a dinner at 7:30 p.m. The cost is $45. For information, contact Marj Rico at 408.288.3730 or marjorie.rico@sjcc.edu.

CASA Fun Run

CASA in Los Gatos will host a Red Ribbon Memorial Fun Run/Walk on Oct. 5 at the Los Gatos High School track. The fun event is open to runners, joggers and walkers.

The fun run begins with an 8:30 a.m. check-in and the event will run from 9 to 10:30 a.m. There will be prizes, music and more at the Sunday event.
