There's some rebuilding to do on the tennis courts at Willow Glen High School this fall, and it's got nothing to do with resurfacing the courts or restringing the racquets.
The Rams lost their top four singles players and three of their four doubles players to graduation last spring, so there's only one varsity starter back on the courts this season.
"We're rebuilding this year," said coach Don Dushane. "Of course, we're still in the Santa Teresa Division since we were not moved down—probably because we finished second in our league last year."
Team captain Surleen Kaur is the only varsity returner for the Rams and one of just five seniors on the squad. Kaur is playing No. 4 singles for Willow Glen.
Sophomore Krista Pronge is playing No. 1 singles with senior Giuliettta Pezzaniti at No. 2 and Tina Panayotopoulos at No. 3. Yesenia Barraza and Rashi Khari, a couple of juniors, are playing No. 1 doubles with sophs Saralee Loredo and Diem Ly Vo at No. 2 and seniors Jenny Dang and Reyna Castro at No. 3.
Willow Glen dropped a 5-2 decision to Pioneer in the Santa Teresa Division of the Blossom Valley Athletic League. The Rams won at No. 2 and No. 3 doubles.
Pronge lost a 6-1, 6-0 decision at No. 1 singles for the Rams. Pezzaniti at No. 2 and Panayotopoulos at No. 3 each lost 6-0, 6-0 and Kaur lost 6-2, 6-1 at No. 4.
Kaur dropped to No. 1 doubles to team with Barraza, but the pair lost 6-2, 6-0.
Willow Glen will try to get back on the winning track this week when they host Evergreen Valley on Oct. 7 and visit Piedmont Hills on Oct. 9 in a couple of 3:15 p.m. matches. The Rams will be back home on Oct. 14 to play host to Mt. Pleasant.
