Ask the runners on the Willow Glen cross country team what their favorite vegetable is, and they'll all agree—it's got to be the artichoke.
The Rams left little doubt last weekend when they turned in an outstanding effort at the 33rd annual Artichoke Invitational in Half Moon Bay.
Leading that showing was the Willow Glen boys freshman team that won the small school title at the Oct. 4 meet.
Sean Robinson led the effort for the Rams by winning the individual title in the division, covering the 2.25mile distance in 13:07.
Sergio Calixto was 10th in 14:09 with Brian Chunn 12th in 14:17 and Evan Bishop 13th in 14:17.
Willow Glen ran up a low 44 points to win the title in the eight-team field.
Willow Glen senior Ngoan Phan finished third in the boys small school varsity division. Phan finished in 17:07 to finish among the leaders.
Senior Gilbert Rosales was 15th in 12:42 with junior Jose Cervantes 37th in 13:11 to lead Willow Glen to a seventh-place finish in the 23-team field.
The Rams were 18th in the 21-team girls division. Senior Eleni Mastorakos was 44th in 15:56 with junior Cristina Diaz 53rd in 16:11.
In the girls frosh-soph division, freshman Ashley Tovar finished eighth overall in 16:08 for the Rams.
Sophomore Justin McArthur finished fifth in 13:18 in the boys frosh-soph race.
In dual meet competition last week, the Rams ran past the Overfelt boys 25-36 in the Mt. Hamilton Division of the Blossom Valley Athletic League.
Phan was first on the 2.73mile course at Montgomery Hill Park, running 15:10 to set the pace for the entire division. Rosales was second for the Rams and 13thh overall in 16:31.
The Willow Glen girls whipped Overfelt 24-33. Diaz was tops for the Rams and second overall in the division at 19:00.
