Librarian honored by city for his service
Councilman Ken Yeager honored retired librarian and Willow Glen resident Maurice Stevenson with a special commendation at a brunch attended by the Friends of the Library on Oct. 4.
Stevenson spent a combined 27 years at the Willow Glen and Santa Teresa branch libraries and 10 years as Willow Glen Library's senior librarian.
On behalf of the city of San Jose and Mayor Gonzalez, Yeager thanked Stevenson for his dedication and public service and said that during Stevenson's career in Willow Glen, he had done much to improve the "attractiveness, accessibility and quality" of the library.
Stevenson said he was "totally stunned" by the recognition and had no idea the ceremony was to honor him.
"When Ken started speaking, I thought 'this sounds like something's going to happen and it involves me,' " he laughed.
Stevenson said he had originally planned to spend that weekend climbing Mt. Whitney, but his family canceled his plans so he could receive his award.
"It was a joy to be in Willow Glen and work with such a fine group," he said to the members of Friends of the Library.
Yeager said it's the first time he's given a city commendation, but wanted to do it because Stevenson is "so well-liked and respected."
