Gurpreet "Tony" Singh has been the manager of Subway Sandwiches located at 1597 A Meridian Ave. for more than two years.
"I like my job. I like working with the people that come in and I like the product we sell," Singh said.
Fred DeLuca started Subway in 1965. DeLuca had just graduated from high school in Bridgeport, Conn., and wanted to attend one of the local colleges. But for the DeLuca family, college was an expense that the family just could not afford.
A family friend made the suggestion to then-17-year-old DeLuca one afternoon that he should open a submarine-sandwich shop.
After a family friend loaned him $1,000, DeLuca rented a small space and began making sandwiches and named the shop Subway.
By 1974 DeLuca and the family friend had opened 16 Subways throughout Connecticut.
To date, there are more than 17,500 Subway restaurants located in 71 countries around the world.
Subway has become famous for its fast, fresh and healthy diet, and the Willow Glen community enjoys the wide variety.
"We have a lot of regular customers who come in every day for lunch. Some of the customers order the same sandwich, but most of them like to try the different sandwiches we offer," Singh said.
The menu at Subway offers 19 different sandwiches, all served on bread that each Subway franchise bakes fresh daily. This list includes seven sandwiches that are claimed to contain fewer than six grams of fat, for those customers who may be dieting.
"We have some really great sandwiches, and the Jared ads are helping people on diets realize that they don't have to eat the same boring food all of the time," Singh said.
The Subway Club is one of the most popular "diet-friendly" sandwiches. Extra-lean sliced turkey breast, sliced roast beef and sliced ham are served with a choice of lettuce, tomato, green peppers, onions, olives and pickles.
Another popular diet sandwich is the Veggie Delite. Lettuce, tomato green peppers and onions are what Jared claimed help him lose so much weight in the Subway ads.
For those customers not counting the fat grams in their diet, Subway has a large selection of both hot and cold sandwiches.
The Dijon Horseradish Melt is sliced turkey breast, ham, bacon, melted cheese topped with a Dijon horseradish sauce that the chefs at Subway's headquarters kitchen concocted.
The Sweet Onion Chicken Teriyaki sandwich is also served hot. Teriyaki-glazed chicken strips are topped with a fat-free sweet onion sauce that makes this another popular sandwich.
The Seafood and Crab sandwich is a mix of seafood and crab blended together in a creamy light mayonnaise. It is also served with a selection of veggies.
Subway also offers its own version of the traditional Tuna sandwich.
Another option is the Meatball sandwich, which consists of large meatballs topped with Subway's own marinara sauce that was created by DeLuca's mother.
The Italian BMT—which customers say stands for "bigger, meatier and tastier"— is Genoa salami, pepperoni and ham served on fresh baked bread.
"It's great to work in a place where you know that everything you are serving your customers is fresh," Singh said. " And the customers really like the smell of the fresh baking bread when they come in."
