Artist Inez Storer's works may look simple at first glance, but take a longer look, and there are layers within layers: color, collage and found objects all emerge from the depths of her paintings and prints.

Three South Bay art institutions are offering a longer look at the landmark works of Bay Area artist Storer, with collaborative exhibits examining different aspects of her art, as well the influence of her art on others. Two of these exhibits open this week.

The de Saisset Museum in Santa Clara began this wide-ranging collaboration when it opened a retrospective of Storer's works in late September. Theatrical Realism: The Art of Inez Storer is the first retrospective of Storer's works and includes about 40 paintings, from 1960 to the present, in addition to artist books, assemblages and prints created by Storer. The exhibit, which is on display through Dec. 7, looks at some of the major themes of Storer's works, including issues of identity, history and imagination.

Storer has touched the Bay Area art landscape not only through her own works, but also through her teaching career. For nearly 20 years, Storer taught young artists at the San Francisco Art Institute, retiring in 1999. The works of 14 of her students will be shown in An Artist's Artist: The Legacy of Inez Storer, which opens Nov. 8 at the San Jose Institute of Contemporary Art. The artists featured in the exhibit have all gone on to acclaimed careers as artists, and credit Storer's teachings as an important influence. An opening reception will be held Nov. 8, 68 p.m.

Although she retired from teaching four years ago, Storer has hardly retired from art, as evidenced by a third exhibit opening Nov. 9 at the Montalvo Gallery at Montalvo in Saratoga. Inez Storer: Encore Narratives is a show of the artist's recent works. Featured will be a selection of 14 paintings, which include a variety of still lifes, portraits and landscapes. Storer will be present for the opening reception, Nov. 9, 35 p.m, where she will give a talk about her works.
