Phan, Grelli win league cross country crowns
By Dick Sparrer
Ngoan Phan was No. 1 and so were the Willow Glen Rams when the teams of the Blossom Valley Athletic League got together for an afternoon run last week at Crystal Springs in Belmont.

The event was the annual BVAL championships, and Phan led the Rams to the team title with his individual victory.

The Willow Glen senior covered the course in 15:53 with teammate Gilbert Rosales sixth in 16:24 to the lead the Rams in race past Silver Creek for the team title. Willow Glen finished with a low 85 team points to 89 for Silver Creek.

The Rams had finished second to the Raiders in the dual meet season in the BVAL's Mt. Hamilton Division. Willow Glen beat Leland 22-36 on the final day of the regular season to finish 6-1 overall, with Silver Creek 7-0. Phan was fourth in 15:22 on the 2.73-mile Montgomery Hill Park in the league race that day with Rosales sixth in 15:43.

In girls competition, Cristina Diaz was fourth in 20:00 to lead Willow Glen to a team third at the BVAL finals last week. Piedmont Hills was first with 77 points, followed by Evergreen Valley at 86 and Willow Glen at 122.

The Rams had finished second to Piedmont Hills in the Mt. Hamilton Division dual meet season. Piedmont posted a 7-0 record with the Rams 6-1.

Willow Glen topped Leland 19-36 in the final meet of the year. Ellen Mastorakos was eighth in the league meet that day in 20:14 with Diaz ninth in 20:22.

Michelle Grelli finished first overall in 17:33 at the West Catholic Athletic League finals to lead Presentation to the league championship.

The Panthers were second to St. Ignatius at the finals last week, but clinched the overall title based on a combination of dual meet and league final results.

Mandy Williams, Sierra Siemer, Kathleen Dazzi and Lauren Albin were other top runners for the league champion Panthers.

Water polo

Julie Oreglia pitched in seven goals in two games and Kristin Gause added six, but the Presentation girls water polo team could manage just a split in the West Catholic Athletic League playoffs last week.

Still, the Panthers managed to finish the regular season with an impressive 24-5 record, good enough for a berth in upcoming Central Coast Section playoffs.

Presentation will open postseason play as the No. 6 seed, facing No. 11 Cupertino (19-8) in a first-round game on Nov. 12, 3 p.m., at Willow Glen High School.

The Panthers opened the WCAL playoffs with a 15-6 win over Valley Christian. Oreglia led the locals with six goals and Gause added four. Julia Pfahnl chipped in with two goals and Amanda Dugoni, Kacie Taranto and Kim Peters added one each.

Presentation lost in the semifinals against St. Francis 11-6. Gause led the Panthers with two goals and Taranto, Oreglia, Dugoni and Megan Crowley had one each.

Randahl Capurro, Ann Collins, Christina Leone, Camille Martell, Maya Rao, Melissa Scheitrum, Katrina Semplinski, Hana Van Hagen and Kelli Wing are other members of the Presentation squad now set to open CCS play.

Volleyball

The Presentation girls volleyball team also lost in the WCAL semifinals of the WCAL tournament, and also lost to St. Francis—but also still managed to clinch a place in the CCS playoffs.

Presentation dropped a 25-20, 25-15, 23-25, 25-18 decision to the Lancers to wind up the regular season 23-10.

The Panthers' lofty record earned them the No. 2 seed and a first-round bye in the CCS Division III tournament. Presentation will face the winner of the Seaside (15-9)-Branham (19-11) first-round match on Nov. 15, 11 a.m., at Santa Clara High School.

Willow Glen, meanwhile, wrapped up the year by dropping a pair of matches to finish 1-13 in the Mt. Hamilton Division of the Blossom Valley Athletic League.

Senior outside hitter Kelsey Roseland had 14 kills, but the Rams lost 25-16, 18-25, 25-16, 25-18 to CCS playoff-bound Branham. Roseland came back with 10 kills a match later, but the Rams lost 25-19, 25-21, 25-23 to Mt. Pleasant.
