Bambi Satter and Dean Sales are ready for the holiday rush at Cooking Etc.
"We opened our store in 1998 and moved from Meridian Avenue to Lincoln Avenue in April. Business has been great since the beginning," Satter said.
Cooking Etc. is the gadget shop of kitchen gadgetry for those people who love or even enjoy cooking with some of the latest cooking "toys" seen on shows like Martha Stewart's and the Cooking Network.
"Many of our customers are big fans of the Cooking Network. They see something on a cooking show, some new gadget that makes preparing meals easier or faster, and they head down to our shop to see it and buy it," Satter said.
Satter and Sales have been making the latest cooking equipment available to customers simply for the love of it all.
"I always wanted to have a shop like this. It was one of those fantasies you carry with you when you're at work or in traffic. When Dean and I were able to open Cooking Etc., it was like a dream come true for both of us," Satter said.
Customers don't have to be chefs or even experts in the kitchen to appreciate some of the items on the shelves of Cooking Etc.
"One of our fastest selling and most popular items is the Arrow Mont Gravy. It's a powdered gravy that you just add water to, cook and serve. It looks and tastes like the gravy our grandmothers used to make. And I say if people think it's homemade, go ahead and take the credit for it! No one needs to know it didn't come from scratch," Satter said.
Some of the other items at Cooking Etc. include All Clad Cookware and Le Creuset cookware.
"Le Creuset is cast-iron cookware with an enamel coating. People love the way cast iron evenly heats and cooks, but it's so hard to keep it clean and not rusting. Le Creuset solves that problem with the enamel," Satter said.
While Le Creuset is a bit pricey, Satter reminds customers that it can last a lifetime if cared for properly.
"Since we've moved into the heart of Willow Glen, we've noticed a change in what our customers are looking for when they come into the store," she said. "More and more people are looking for tabletop items like serving dishes and flatware. We're carrying more of that now than we did at the other location."
Customer service and satisfaction are top priorities as well as having the latest cooking items in stock, for Satter and Sales.
"We have a lot of foodstuffs now like special salts and spices that people want after seeing it used. We have some chutneys and different-flavored cooking oils and sauces," Satter said.
If a customer comes in looking for an item that isn't normally carried in the store, Satter and Sales will try to custom-order the request.
"We do a lot of demonstrating here. There's nothing worse than seeing a new gadget on TV, buying it and then not being able to use it when you get home or finding that what you bought isn't really something that you need," Satter said. "We try to have a sort of show-and-tell with the customers so that they know exactly what they're buying and how to use it."
Cooking Etc. is located at 1395 Lincoln Ave. It is open Monday through Saturday from 10 a.m. until 6 p.m. The store is closed on Sundays. For more information, call 408.279.4787.
