To be sure that consumers everywhere won't forget the true meaning of the holiday season, malls everywhere have begun stringing lights, hanging ornaments and playing the requisite musical classics. Weary shoppers can take refuge in the coming weeks with several performances from groups staying clear of the pre-holiday cheer.
Maintaining a commitment to true performance practice, the Baroque Choral Guild uses all period instruments in Baroque pitch for its Nov. 22 concert in Palo Alto. The Baroque Choral Guild Chorus launches its 25th anniversary season Bach's Mass in B minor, performing with Jubilate Baroque Orchestra.
The group will again host a pre-concert lecture with Peter Susskind, director of the South Bay Youth Orchestra, during which he will take questions from the audience and present an overview of and background information for the performance piece.
Local soloists striving to present a piece in as authentic a form as possible include sopranos Catherine Webster and Ruth Escher, mezzo soprano Wendy Hillhouse, tenor Kevin Gibbs and bass Paul Thompson. Their collective experience in the Baroque period brings influences of Mozart, Handel and Brahms.
The Baroque Choral Guild performs at the First United Methodist Church in Palo Alto on. Nov. 22 at 8 p.m. Call the guild at 650.424.1410 or go to www.bcg.org for tickets. Tickets are $10 to $25.
