Alicia Follmar could have won the title in four of the five divisions at the Central Coast Section cross country finals. Unfortunately, the Saratoga junior runs in the same division as Presentation senior sensation Melissa Grelli.
Grelli covered the 2.95mile course at Crystal Springs in Belmont in 17:55 to win the CCS Division III championship. In the process, the talented senior star posted the best girls time of the day.
Follmar gave Grelli a run for her money, finishing 18 seconds back in 18:13. Her time was also better than any time recorded in girls competition at CCS.
The two section cross country stars will be at it again this week when they compete in the state meet on Nov. 29 at Woodward Park in Fresno.
While Grelli set the pace for the day with her 17:55 at CCS, Marie Nguyen of Milpitas won Division I in 18:26, Tori Tyler of Gunn took Division II in 18:44, Stephanie Hamilton of San Lorenzo Valley was tops in Division IV in 18:59 and Tomi Amos of Castilleja was first in Division V in 18:53.
In boys competition, Jeremy Mineau of Menlo Atherton set the pace with his Division Iwinning time of 15:03. Monta Vista junior Jason Yow was second in the division in 15:30.
Rounding out the list of boys winners were Kyle Shackleton of Carlmont (Division II, 15:35), Nathan Huerta of North Monterey (Division III, 15:39), Alex Dunn of San Lorenzo Valley (Division IV, 15:04) and Jack Welch of Redwood Christian (Division V, 15:30).
Grelli's winning effort sparked the Panthers to a second-place finish in Division III behind St. Ignatius. The Wildcats finished with 56 points to 82 for the Panthers. Burlingame was third at 91.
Sophomore Kathleen Dazzi was 16th in 20:19 for Presentation with junior Sierra Siemer 17th in 20:20, junior Lauren Albin 20th in 20:24 and senior Morgan Davies 44th in 21:37.
Willow Glen managed to finish ninth in the girls Division III standings. Senior Eleni Mastorakas was 32nd in 21:01 with junior Christine Diaz 35th in 21:16 and junior Montserrat Alvarado 53rd in 21:54.
In the boys Division III finals, senior Ngoan Phan was 15th in 16:37 and senior Gilbert Rosales was 16th in 16:45 to lead Willow Glen to a team seventh. Sophomores Ruben Camacho (65th), Robert Ramos (66th) and Justin McArthur (72nd) rounded out the top five for the Rams.
