Neeraj Dewan came to the United States from India in 1997.

"In India I was a student and an engineer. I enjoyed the work but wanted to have my own business when I came to America," Dewan said. That opportunity presented itself in the form of a Subway Sandwich shop in Willow Glen.

In July 2003, Dewan opened his eatery on Lincoln Avenue.

"I am very lucky to be able to have my business in the Willow Glen area. This is a great place to work," Dewan said.

Subway Sandwich shops were started in Bridgeport, Conn., by Fred DeLuca in 1965 with a loan and some advice from a family friend.

By 1974 Deluca and the friend who had given him the advice had opened a total of 16 sandwich shops. The sandwich shops went on to became one of the most popular places to grab a bite in the United States. There are currently more than 17,500 shops around the world.

"We bake our own bread in the shops. That means that when a customer walks in, they can smell the bread and know that they are going to be getting the freshest bread they can," Dewan said.

The menu at Dewan's Subway Sandwich shop is consistent with those of the rest of the locations.

"It's nice for people to go into a familiar place and know exactly what they will be getting, whether it's from the Subway around the corner from their home or a Subway in another state," Dewan said.

Subway currently offers 19 different kinds of sandwiches, all served on the fresh baked bread. Out of those 19 sandwiches there are seven sandwiches that are claimed to have fewer than six grams of fat.

"Many people are dieting now. We want to help them stay healthy and on their diet. So we offer lots of fresh food that is healthy," Dewan said.

One of the coming attractions to Subways everywhere will be the breakfast menu.

"We're going to be serving breakfast soon to our customers. Subway has come up with some delicious breakfast sandwiches," said Dewan.

The breakfast menu will consist of egg and cheese rolls, ham and egg rolls, sausage and egg rolls and fresh, hot coffee.

"At the beginning of the year Subway will be offering food approved for people on the Atkins Diet," Dewan said.

"I know a lot of people are on that diet now and it's working for them. I want to be able to offer them food that will still be OK for them to have," Dewan said.

Dewan is also thinking about the upcoming holiday season.

"There are many people who won't have time to cook as much as they usually would. Subway is a good and healthy thing to have for dinner," Dewan said.

Subway also does catering trays and a six-foot long sandwich for parties.

"We can do a lot for our customers. All they have to do is call and ask and we'll do what we can to make them happy," Dewan said.

Subway is located at 1141 Lincoln Ave. Open Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. until 9 p.m., Saturday and Sunday from 10 a.m. until 8 p.m. For more information call 408.293.SUBS or visit the website a http://www.subway.com for a full menu and party ideas.
