Kiel Trudeau and Joe Hurley ... Mike Day and Andre Ingram ... Tom Bingham and Sean Connors.
Their numbers in the recently completed football season were almost gaudy.
But while in some circles that description may be less than flattering, in football it's a good thing—at least, that's what the coaches in the Blossom Valley Athletic League must have been thinking.
All six players were picked to top spots on the all-league teams in the Mt. Hamilton and Santa Teresa divisions of the BVAL after putting up some very impressive numbers in the recently completed campaign.
Leigh's Trudeau and Bingham won special honors on the Mt. Hamilton Division dream team, and Branham's Ingram joined Leland's Day, Hurley and Connors as special award winners in the Santa Teresa Division of the BVAL.
Day joined Oak's Grove junior Burton Iosefa and Willow Glen senior Chris Hobbs as a BVAL Most Valuable Player this fall, and for good reason. The Leland senior ran up impressive numbers as he led the Chargers to the Santa Teresa Division championship.
The talented back was second to only Danny Bates of Los Gatos in rushing and scoring in the Santa Clara Valley this fall. Bates ran for 2,392 yards and scored 188 points on 31 touchdowns and a 2-point conversion, and Day was close behind with 2,080 yards and 148 points on 24 touchdowns and two 2-pointers.
Leigh's Trudeau and Bingham rivaled Leland's Hurley and Connors as top passer-receiver combinations in the valley.
Trudeau led all passers in the area by throwing for 1,813 yards. His favorite target was Bingham, who receiving total of 907 yards was also tops in the valley.
Hurley was close behind with 1,731 yards passing, finishing second to Trudeau. Connors was third in receiving with 822 yards, finishing behind Bingham and Matt Martini of Los Gatos (895).
West Valley Division
Hobbs was named the MVP and his coach, Andy Penwarden, was picked the Coach of the Year after the Willow Glen Rams won the West Valley Division title on the last day of the regular season.
Rams Justin Ble, Lalo Garces and Alex Green each won all-league first team honors offensively, and Matt Arevalo, Ricardo Munoz and Nate Torres were tabbed the first defense for Willow Glen.
Earning all-league second team spots for the Rams were Andy Huynh, Vince Lopez, Avido Sainz, Nick Barreto, Eugene Martinez and Mario Montes.
Girls volleyball
Senior Kelsey Roseland of Willow Glen won a place on the Mt. Hamilton Division all-league first team in girls volleyball.
The Scala sisters of Leland were honored with special places on the Mt. Hamilton Division all-league team, along with teammate Christy Gillick and Leland coach Trish Moore.
Briana Scala walked off with the league's top honor, the Most Valuable Player award. Chaulet Scala joined her sister on the special honors list by winning the league's Freshman of the Year award.
Water polo
There was no water polo team better than Leland in the Mt. Hamilton Division of the Blossom Valley Athletic League this fall, and there was no player in the division better than senior Zac Monsees.
At least, that was the consensus of the league's coaches when they got together recently to select their 2003 all-league team.
Monsees, who broke his own single-season scoring record at Leland this year, was named the league's Most Valuable Player after leading the Chargers to a perfect record in the regular league season and league playoffs.
Monsees was joined on the all-league special honors list by teammate Mike Walters, who was named the Mt. Hamilton Senior of the Year, and by his father, Mike Monsees, who was picked the Coach of the Year.
Senior goalkeeper Ryan Rodrigues and senior 2-meter man Nick Beene were Leland players named to the all-league first team.
Chane Vermilyea of Pioneer was selected as the league's Junior of the Year. Senior Chris Emert was an all-league first teamer from Pioneer.
Jason Tom of Willow Glen and Ryan Floersch of Mt. Pleasant were named co-Sophomores of the Year in the league. Joining Tom on the all-league list from Willow Glen was senior Andy Okun, first team. Tom was also named an all-league second teamer.
Two-meter star Katie Rogers of Lincoln was named the league MVP after leading the Lions to the championship in the BVAL's Mt. Hamilton Division.
Stephanie Kirby of Independence was picked the league's Senior of the Year and Juliet Moss of Mt. Pleasant was the Junior of the Year, but the rest of the league's special awards went to Leland.
Leland goalkeeper Danielle Gold was tabbed the Sophomore of the Year in the league and teammate Courtney Monsees was selected as the Freshman of the Year.
Senior driver Lucy Engelter and freshman utility player Monsees were each named to the all-league first team for Leland with junior 2-meter player Casey Armstrong a second-team pick for the Chargers.
Rounding out the all-league first team were junior Kelly Perryman of Piedmont Hills, sophomore Fannie Ko of Independence, junior Crystal Nakimura of Silver Creek, junior Jennifer Nayala of Santa Teresa and sophomore Daniella Verlarquez of Mt Pleasant.
Sophomores Katie Lopiccolo of Pioneer and Laura Vonstockhausen of Willow Glen were named to the second team.
