A master drummer clinic followed by performance

Drummer Dave Weckl offers a clinic at West Valley College followed by a concert with the college's jazz ensemble Jan. 22. For $30, student drummers can participate in the class at 4:30 p.m. The show for the public takes place at 8 p.m.

Weckl's 20-year career has taken him from a big break with Simon and Garfunkel's reunion tour in 1983 to work on radio and TV jingles, soundtrack sessions and recordings with jazz and pop legends including George Benson, Chick Corea and Diana Ross.

He travels the world playing festivals and jazz clubs, including Yoshi's in the East Bay and Jazz Alley in Seattle. Clinics and seminars are an important element of Weckl's career. He says he hopes to inspire as many people as he can, young and old, to take up an instrument.

"I feel this is my way of contributing a postitive action toward spiritual happiness, which music can be a big part of, if you let it," says Weckl of his teaching.

The college's jazz series is part of a bigger plan of rebuilding its music department by bringing world-class jazz artists to a newly refurbished theater on the Saratoga campus.

Call 408.741.2096 for tickets or go to www.westvalleyjazz.com for information on upcoming concerts.
