Willow Glen High School's drama students are gearing up to present residents with a little razzle-dazzle at the second annual "Night of Theatre" talent show.
Drama students in Sarah Miller's advanced and beginning drama classes have been practicing their routines since the end of November, ranging from sword fights, gymnastics and dance routines to original, one-act plays.
"I came up with the idea for a talent show as the students' final assessment because there wasn't a final required at the end of the semester," Miller says. "It is held to show what they've learned as far as performing arts standards."
The 27-year-old teacher says that to her knowledge, no other nearby school has the same type of talent show. She has taught at the school for six years and says holding the "Night of Theatre" has been a learning process not only for the students, but for her as well.
"It's a one-night performance, so whatever happens, happens," she says. "On the night of the show, I will be there to help the students if anything goes wrong, but I'm not nervous about it at all."
The talent show is purely an entertainment showcase and does not involve any competition between the students. More than 50 students will perform in two- to seven-minute acts.
"It's a student-run show," says student and performing arts club Vice President Rachel Cross. "Last year it sold out, with people even sitting on the floor in the aisles."
She says the show will have something for everyone to enjoy, including students performing dance routines from the musical Chicago and interpretive dancing.
The "Night of Theatre" will take place Jan. 22 at the Willow Glen High School Little Theater, 2001 Cottle Ave. Admission for adults and students is $3. The doors will open at 6:30 p.m. and the show begins at 7 p.m.
