It was really a basketball game, but it almost looked like a track meet when the Willow Glen girls basketball team came out of the blocks with a fast start against Lincoln on Feb. 5.
The Rams took the opening tip-off and scored from almost every place on the court in the first eight minutes of play as they got on track for a lopsided 56-22 victory over the Lions in the West Valley Division of the Blossom Valley Athletic League.
A trio of Rams put on a scoring clinic with Mikka Dixon having the hottest hand. Dixon drove the baseline and pulled up to drop in a short jumper for two. She grabbed a steal and raced the length of the court on a breakaway to lay in another two. Dixon also fired a long pass deep down the court to Kiley McKown, who was all alone and laid it in for an easy two points.
Candace Gallegos got an assist when she drove the lane, drawing the defense to her, and then slipped a quick pass to Maja Johnson under the basket for two points. On another Ram possession, Johnson grabbed a rebound and put it back up for another two.
Dixon closed out the first quarter scoring when she snagged a rebound and then flipped it up and under the hoop, dropping it in for another bucket.
There was less than a minute left in the quarter, and the Rams held a 14-0 lead.
Lincoln did not go without its chances in the action, but nothing the Lions tossed up found the bottom of the net. The Lions finally broke the scoring ice when Anais Bueno nailed a three-pointer with about 45 seconds left in the quarter.
The quarter ended with Willow Glen on top at 14-3 and they never looked back as they raced to the solid 56-22 victory. The Rams moved to 7-1 in West Valley Division play to hold onto sole possession of second place, staying one game behind Prospect (8-0).
"That's the team I know can play," said Willow Glen coach Amy Gannon. "We came out ready to play. We stayed strong and played as a team and, even though we got way ahead, we stayed focused."
The Rams continued their torrid pace into the second quarter by opening with eight more unanswered points. It was Diana Schnabel who came off the bench to take over the offensive show for the Rams. She had a hand in all eight of Willow Glen's second quarter points. Schnabel dished out three assists from her wing position, passing the ball inside and low to McKown and Johnson, who banked in the points. Schnabel got in on the scoring action herself by taking the ball and dribbling left into the lane to put in a short jumper. That gave Willow Glen a commanding 22-3 lead midway through the quarter.
Gannon freely substituted throughout the second half, giving her bench plenty of playing time, and every Ram ended scoring. Three Rams finished in double digits, Johnson leading the way with 15 points. McKown scored in every quarter, popping in 14 points, and Dixon followed closely with 11 while Gallegos added four. Corina Lopez, Schnabel, Emily Roberts, Aquina Turner, Edith Vazquez and Nicole Garcia dropped in two points each.
Earlier in the week, Willow Glen had continued its winning ways with a 53-41 victory over James Lick. Johnson poured in 22 points with McKown and Dixon firing in 12 each.
