A marathon massage day benefits homeless

La Concha Spa massage therapist Ana Navia plans a marathon massage day at the spa to support a cause close to her heart.

On April 4, she celebrates her birthday by using her massage talents to raise money to benefit homeless people in the Philippines. All fees and tips that are collected during the day will help assist in building homes for the homeless in the Philippines. All donations, which are tax-deductible, will go directly to Answering The Cry Of The Poor Foundation, which provides money for students to attend school for one year and also funds the construction of homes for families.

The fundraising event will be from 7:30 a.m. to 10:30 p.m.

For more information, contact La Concha Spa at 408.286.8612. The La Concha Spa is located at 1042 Lincoln Ave.

Help save lives at the Red Cross blood drive

Be a blood donor and save three peoples' lives. The Red Cross has a blood drive at Booksin Elementary School on April 2.

"The Red Cross is always short of blood," said Booksin Elementary School & Community Association member Vern Ladd, who is coordinating the blood drive.

Ladd said the association has previously partnered with the Red Cross to hold blood drives at the school four times.

"It's a great opportunity to tie the schools and community together," he added.

Red Cross donor recruitment representative Lori Peterson said that the Bay Area only has enough blood to last 18 hours in a major disaster, when the organization would like to have a week's supply.

Peterson added that the current national blood shortage was exacerbated by a four-day snowstorm in Portland, Ore., in January that depleted other states' blood-bank reserves in order to supply the need in Portland.

Blood donors must register at www.Be ADonor.com and enter "Booksin" as the sponsor code.

The blood drive will take place in the Booksin Elementary School cafeteria April 2 between 1 p.m. and 7 p.m. Child care and snacks will be provided.

For more information, contact Vern Ladd at 408.448.2323.
