Safe at Home: Willow Glen catcher Justin Jeffrey puts the tag on Leland's Danny Dyer at home plate, but it's just a little too late. Dyer scored in Leland's 5-0 win over the Rams last week.
Willow Glen drops two games to Leland

Willow Glen's Carlos Torres had already pitched a no-hitter to open league play and Leland's Kyle Woodruff had yet to taste defeat this year when the two aces of their teams squared off last week.

But it was Woodruff (5-0) who came out on top this time, limiting the Rams to only two hits and striking out seven as Leland claimed a 5-0 win over Willow Glen in the first of their two Blossom Valley Athletic League Mt. Hamilton Division games last week.

"They just beat us," Willow Glen coach Bret Gladden said. "At 6-foot-5, Woodruff is intimidating and he throws hard, and we are a light hitting team." In six Mt. Hamilton Division games this season, the Rams have been able to push across only 11 runs.

Torres (4-2) turned in a quality performance, giving up only six hits and five runs—two of which were earned—while striking out four Chargers in the five innings he pitched.

In the rematch later in the week, it was more of the same for the Rams when they could only come up with four hits in support of Jason Ethridge, who was on the mound for Willow Glen. Leland got the best of Willow Glen once more in an 8-4 victory. Ethridge (4-3) took the loss, pitching six innings and giving up five runs with only four of them earned. He sat down seven Chargers on strikeouts.

The Rams took a 2-1 lead after an inning, manufacturing two runs on only one hit. John Gibilisco worked a walk and then came around to score when Chris Hobbs blasted a double. Hobbs took third on a passed ball and scampered home for the score on Justin Jeffrey's fielder's choice.

The lead was short-lived, though, when Leland tied it up in the top half of the second. The game remained closely contested until Leland jumped in front 4-2 in the fourth.

The Rams came fighting back in the fifth to tie it up once more. Designated hitter Matt Arevalo started things off with a single and then promptly stole second. Nick Ward reached base on an error. Jason Jeffrey came through with a solid single, driving in both Arevalo and Ward for the tying runs.

Unfortunately for the Rams, Leland came up with a run in the sixth and three more in the seventh to secure the win.

The win kept Leland (5-1) in a tie for first place with Westmont (5-1) in the BVAL Mt. Hamilton Division. Willow Glen (2-4) dropped to fifth in the division. The Rams are off this week for spring break but it doesn't get any easier when the Rams return to division play. They will face Westmont in a home and home series on April 20 (at Westmont) and April 22 (at Willow Glen). It will be a great opportunity for the Rams to get back in the thick of the title race.

Westmont tops Rams

Justin Ble hammered home 13 kills, but the Willow Glen boys volleyball team lost a tough 16-25, 25-19, 25-19, 20-25, 15-13 decision to Westmont last week in Mt. Hamilton Division play. The Rams slipped to 6-3 in the division and to 13-8 for the year.

Barreto leads Rams

Nic Barreto fired a five-over par 38 to lead the Willow Glen golf team to a lopsided 213-314 win over James Lick last week at the San Jose Country Club. The Rams are now 10-0 in the BVAL's Santa Teresa Division.
