International-exchange programs are usually reserved for youth, who make the experience of living in another country part of their high school education. But at one South Bay gallery, such cultural swaps aren't just for those still in school--although artists and gallery visitors alike are likely to learn a lot from The Art of Exchange: Stuttgart ó San Jose. The new exhibit displays artworks exchanged between the Walter Bischoff Galerie in Stuttgart, Germany, and the San Jose Institute of Contemporary Art (SJICA) in downtown San Jose.

The U.S. side of the exhibit, which opened at SJICA in mid-April, features the works of eight German-based artists: Michael Danner, Hildegard Esslinger, Steffan Fischer, Rainer Goerss, Manfred Hebenstreit, Valery Koshlyakov, Hannah Stütz-Mentzel and Stefan Voigt.

Meanwhile, the Walter Bischoff Galerie in Stuttgart, Germany, has launched the first of three presentations featuring six Bay Area artists: Kelly Detweiler, Kathryn Dunlevie, Susan Felter, Katherine Levin-Lau, David Pace and Glen Rogers. The Bischoff Galerie has another location in Berlin, which is also featuring some of the art from this exchange.

The San Jose Institute of Contemporary Art and the Bischoff Galerie share more than the artworks on their walls. Both galleries feature an emphasis on contemporary art and have a mission of supporting and promoting the works of emerging artists. The two institutions even almost literally share some common ground (within the city limits, anyway), with the fact that gallery owner Walter Bischoff keeps a studio/workshop in San Jose.

The Art of Exchange: Stuttgart ó San Jose through June 4 at San Jose Institute of Contemporary Art, 451 S. First St., San Jose. Call 408.283.8155 or see www.sjica.org.
