Barreto stars for Willow Glen in championship golf season
By Dick Sparrer
It's all over in the golf race in the Santa Teresa Division of the Blossom Valley Athletic League, and Bob Parker's Willow Glen Rams are wearing the crown.

The Rams added to their league-leading numbers last week with lopsided wins over both Yerba Buena and James Lick.

"We're 12-0 and have clinched the championship," said Parker. "This is a great group of kids who took care of business in a weak league."

Leading the way for the Rams most of the year has been senior Nik Barreto.

"He's been the medalist every time out but one," said Parker of Barreto, who did it again last week by claiming top honors in each match.

Barreto shot an even par 34 at the Spring Valley Golf Course in Willow Glen's 213-268 win over Yerba Buena, and he carded a one-over par 37 at San Jose Muni in a 216-290 win over Lick.

Junior Brad Kompelien and sophomore Joe Pineda have alternated in the No. 2 spot for the Rams this season. Senior Andy Okun, sophomore Tim Smith and freshman Royce Kirk round out the Willow Glen varsity.

Panthers in Top-8

Melissa Grelli ran to a solid fourth-place finish in the 1,600-meter run to lead the Presentation showing at the Central Coast Section Top-8 Meet at Los Gatos on April 23.

Grelli covered the four laps in 5:09.57 to finish fourth with teammate Mandy Williams seventh in 5:14.56. Williams was also seventh in the 800 in 2:21.01.

Krisha De La Fuente flipped the discus 111-5 to finish seventh in the Top-8 meet for the Panthers, and she was also seventh in the shot put with a 34-5 effort.

Rams net win

The Willow Glen badminton team posted a tight 8-7 win over Prospect last week to push its record to 3-7 in the Santa Teresa Division of the Blossom Valley Athletic League.

Kristel Pioquinto and Thu Tran, both first-year players, pulled out a victory at No. 2 girls doubles to snap a 7-7 tie in the team score to push the Rams past the Panthers.

The Rams lost a tough 9-6 decision to Overfelt later in the week. Despite the lost, Willow Glen swept the boys singles competition with Long Nguyen winning 15-5, 15-1 at No. 1, Steven Eicher winning 15-10, 15-5 at No. 2 and Bryant Chau winning 15-6, 15-4 at No. 3.

The No. 2 boys doubles team of Lehmber Singh and Du Doan won twice last week, pushing their season record to 8-1 in league play. The No. 3 girls doubles team of Sandy Tat and Natalie Groft also won twice.
