Ethridge, Torres toss Rams to back-to-back victories
By Greg Hancock
As the saying goes, pitching wins baseball games. Never was this so true as on April 22 when Willow Glen played host to Westmont in an important Blossom Valley Athletic League game.

Senior pitcher Jason Ethridge was dominant in leading the Rams to a 1-0 win, helped his team improve to 4-4 in league play. Westmont dropped to 5-4 in league play.

Ethridge held Westmont to two hits in seven innings, striking out eight and walking only three. He improved his mound record to 4-3.

The only scoring in the game came in the fourth inning. Tyler Smith singled with one out, then an out later scored when first baseman Steve Rebagliati ripped a double down the left field line. That is all Ethridge would need on this day.

Ethridge did have some help from his teammates. Shortstop Carlos Torres made a spectacular play in the third inning when he took a hit away by diving and spearing a hard hit ground ball deep in the hole at shortstop, then made the tough throw for the out.

"That was a big time play Carlos made," said Willow Glen coach Bret Gladden.

Westmont made the game interesting in the seventh inning when Ethridge gave up a leadoff walk. But after a strikeout, the Westmont runner was picked off of first base for the second out. Ethridge struck out his eighth batter to end the game with exclamation mark.

Rebagliati and Smith each had two hits in the game to account for half of Willow Glen's eight hits.

Earlier in the week, Willow Glen beat Westmont 8-3 as Torres earned the victory and improved his record to 5-2.

The Warriors took the early lead with a run in the first, but the Rams took control by scoring two each in the fourth, fifth, sixth and seventh. Westmont could just add single runs in the fifth and seventh.

The Jeffrey brothers—senior Justin and sophomore Jason—each singled and doubled to lead a 10-hit assault for the Rams.

Willow Glen faces a tough two-game series with Leigh this week. The Rams were to visit the Longhorns on April 27 and will host Leigh on April 29, 3:30 p.m.

The Rams and Longhorns are both 4-4 and share fourth place in the tough Mt. Hamilton Division with Oak Grove. The clubs are three games off the pace being set by first-place Leland in the tight league race. The Chargers two-timed Leigh last week to improve to 7-1 in the division. Santa Teresa and Westmont share second with matching 5-3 records. Mt. Pleasant isn't that far off the pace at 3-5 with Prospect winless at 0-8.

Willow Glen will face those last-place Panthers for two games next week, visiting Prospect on May 4, 3:30 p.m., before hosting the Panthers that Thursday.
