Hicklebee's recognized
by national association

Hicklebee's may be a children's bookstore, but adults are taking notice too.

Hicklebee's owner Valerie Lewis will soon head to Chicago to receive the Women's National Book Association's Pannell Award as the country's top children's bookstore. The ceremony is scheduled for on June 4.

The award couldn't come at a better time because this year marks the store's 25th year in business. And to mark this event the store is having an anniversary sale, which began May 21.

Relay for life volunteers
raise bucks for cancer

Willow Glen residents aren't afraid to walk or run toward supporting a good cause.

On May 15 and 16, residents demonstrated their volunteerism in Relay for Life, a 24-hour fundraiser where participants ran or walked continuously around the Willow Glen High School track to raise money toward cancer research.

The American Cancer Society fundraiser garnered more than $65,000, with one team raising $13,000. But the numbers aren't final. Although most of the money will go toward research, many residents attended and participated in the event to honor loved ones lost to cancer and celebrate the lives of those who've survived the disease.

At the end of the event, 75 balloons containing messages for loved ones were let go.

Taser subdues a man
on Glen Eyrie Avenue

On May 20, a police officer used a taser to subdue 21-year-old Jason Richardson near his residence on Glen Eyrie Avenue.

San Jose Police spokeswoman Gina Tepoorten said police initially came to Glen Eyrie to check out a hit-and-run accident Richardson was involved in, although he was not the driver. Police soon discovered Richardson was violating his parole because he was intoxicated. According to police Richardson resisted arrest by the officer and fled on foot but officers quickly caught up with him and used the taser, an electric stun gun. Richardson was taken to Valley Medical Center where he was booked.
