Fasano family frogs leap into first place at Calaveras contest
By Beth Walker
Bob Fasano knows how to pick leggy frogs that go the distance. The veteran frog jumper, whose family has participated in the Calaveras County Fair Frog Jumping Jubilee for more than 45 years, won the world championship this year.

The lucky winner that was chosen from approximately 300 frogs near a pond on Dry Creek Road leapt 20 feet and 2.5 inches on May 16, said Bob's wife, Alma.

Bob's 2004 winning frog's distance outpaced his last first-place title in 1998 at 19 feet and 4 inches. This year Bob named the frog contestant "Red Bull," after the energy drink.

"He was flying off the pad like he had wings," he said.

Participating in frog jumping competitions has become not only a family tradition, but also a family reunion with the involvement of grandparents, aunts, uncles and grandchildren.

The family's long-legged affair with amphibians was first reported in the June 11, 2003 issue of the Willow Glen Resident.

This year's win continues in the family's winning streak, with Bob's mother, Lilian Fasano, winning first place in the senior division. His son, Justin, 6, earned second in the junior division with "Croaker." And Bob's niece, Gabby Fasano, followed her cousin, Justin, in third place with the amphibious "Humpty-Jumpty."

Despite the nicknames and casual family fun, there is technique involved, says Bob, who hits the ground next to the frog to startle it, yells or blows on the amphibian.

"It's about tradition," Bob says. "I've done this all my life. It's something unusual and we've become world champions in it."
