Regina Banares of the San Jose Lawn Bowls Club has qualified for the U.S. Championships to be held this October in Phoenix, Ariz. Banares earned her berth by winning the title in the South Central Women's playdowns.

Her husband, Andre Banares, was the runner-up in the men's division in the South Central tournament.

In other San Jose Lawn Bowls Club news, the Willow Glen team of Fred Gardner, John Ogden, Helen Brady and Ken Brady won the season's first tournament, the Club Rinks.

In an inter-club match for the "Silicow Chip Trophy," San Jose defeated Oakland 5 games to 3.

Rowers nail second

The Los Gatos Rowing Club's girls varsity lightweight 8 team won a berth in the national championships by finishing second at the regionals held May 8 at Lake Natomas in Sacramento.

The girls, who have been rowing together for the past three years, had to finish in the top two to qualify for nationals, and they did with their second-place finish in the 12-team field. Rowers from all of California and Arizona were represented in the event.

Members of the team, coached by Nathan Cravens, included Dora Chua of Saratoga High School, Katie Erickson and Emily Harper of Los Gatos High, Michelle Lewuerz and Alyssa Kehriotas of Mitty and Claire O'Conner, Sam Burns, Emily Muscatell, Mary Morici and Alex Werner of Presentation.

The girls varsity lightweight 8 was the only boat from the Los Gatos Rowing Club to qualify for nationals.

Girls soccer camp

Kids triathlon

The fifth annual Silicon Valley Kids Triathlon will be held June 6 at De Anza College in Cupertino. The triathlon, following the traditional bike-swim-run format, begins at 8 a.m. and is open to athletes ages under 6 to 14. Each course is age appropriate.

The registration fee is $38 and registration forms are available at www.svtriclub.org (click on the Kids Triathlon logo), or register online at www.active.com.

Proceeds from the event benefit the Silicon Valley Children's Fund, dedicated to developing and supporting special programs, projects and services to help and heal the abused, neglected and at-risk youth at the Children's Shelter of Santa Clara County and in the community.
