Schallenberger honors
Flag Day with diversity

Flag Day won't be just another day at Schallenberger Elementary School.

On June 14, the elementary school is holding its annual American Heritage Day to celebrate cultural diversity in the United States. Students are inviting the community to attend their school's American Heritage Day assembly at 9:30 a.m. to watch students participate in American folk dances. Fourth- and fifth-graders are also planning to read their award-winning essays to the crowd, which were based on the theme "Women Heroes in American History."

During the assembly, the schools will donate $1,000 to representatives from the Georgia Travis Center and the Yosemite Fund for the Yosemite Falls campaign. The checks were fundraised through a year-long schoolwide penny drive.

Walking just got safer along Lincoln Avenue

"Trip the light fantastic" could be the new cry on Lincoln Avenue.

In an effort to improve pedestrian safety, a number of pedestrians' signs are scheduled to light up when people enter a crosswalk. The installation of the first lighted pedestrian sign is scheduled for June 7.

District 6 Councilman Ken Yeager has been working with the city's department of transportation to enhance safety along Lincoln Avenue. The new signs use wireless technology and are solar- and battery-powered.

The first crosswalk to use this technology is located just south of Willow Street on Lincoln Avenue, one of the most heavily crossed sections of downtown Willow Glen. A second sign is planned for the crosswalk near Le Boulanger Bakery. Up to three new signs are planned. The locations are being coordinated with businesses and neighborhood associations.
