The sun was shining. The wind was blowing. The pitchers stood atop the mound. The batters stood waiting with determination in their eyes.
The championship game was about to begin, and neither team was looking to back down. The Lincoln Glen Little League all-stars were set to face Cambrian Park on June 29 for the District 12 9-year-old baseball championship.
Lincoln Glen was able to wrest any hopes of victory from Cambrian with a 9-2 victory to claim the district crown.
The big rally for Lincoln Glen came right away the top of the first inning. The visitors scored three runs on three hits by Tucker Bacon, Marquez Onorato and Graham Moore. These three runs were enough to take the win, but Lincoln Glen refused to put down their bats.
In the top of the second, Troy Paskent ripped a single and scored when Bacon reached on an error.
Justin Bruce led off the third by reaching on an error. Jimmy Riley smashed a double advancing Bruce to third and both runners were driven home on a base knock by Joe Sullivan. Sullivan advanced to second on an attempt to get Riley at the plate, went to third on an infield single by Cole Carnehan and scored on an overthrow.
Taylor Meeker opened up the fourth with a base hit and was forced on a fielder's choice by Bacon. Onorato moved Bacon to third with a hard single. Onorato stole second and, on the throw to catch him, Bacon was able to score.
Paskent reached in the top of the fifth on a fielder's choice and was later driven home on a single by Riley, scoring the final run for Lincoln Glen.
Jack O'Hara also reached base on a walk in the Lincoln Glen win.
Lincoln Glen outscored its opponents 63-8 in the District 12 tournament. The locals played 12 games together, winning nine of the game by the 10-run rule.
"Not only do they hit well, but they play good defense," said coach Mike Riley. "It's pitching and defense that wins tournaments." His club certainly proved his in this tournament.
Lincoln Glen faced Almaden South on June 28 in the semifinal round of the tournament, winning 11-2 to advance to the finals.
Carnehan crushed a triple, a single and scored two runs for Lincoln Glen, and Bacon hammered two base knocks and scored two runs. Bruce and Meeker each singled and scored two runs apiece in the win. Riley ripped two base hits and scored a run. Onorato whacked a double and a single to help out his club and both Adam Taylor and Jordan Crocker mashed singles and scored runs for Lincoln Glen.
Major division
The District 12 major division tournament, hosted by Lincoln Glen, opened on July 2 with pool play to continue through July 10. The semifinals will be played July 12 at 5:30 p.m. with the championship game July 14, 5:30 p.m.
Members of the Lincoln Glen Little League major division all-star team include Conner Halfield, K.C. Carr, Nick Mingione, Kevin Glomb, Kyle Olugbade, Ryan Albin, Justin D'Angelo, Ryan Sommers, Kevin Garish, Zack Malick and Joe Sullivan.
Lincoln Glen battles Los Gatos National on July 8, 5:30 p.m., and Almaden South on July 10, 10 a.m.
Making up the Willow Glen Little League all-star team are Wesley Barone, Kyle Barton, D.J. Blickenstaff, Tanner Condie, Trevo Dyer, Christopher Emory, Seth Hein, Elliott Hoffman, Christian Moreno, Jeffrey Stapleton, Jesse Toscano and Matthew Wicker.
Willow Glen will face Los Gatos American on July 7, 5:30 p.m., and American Little League on July 10, 12:30 p.m.
