Art and conversation
are blended at exhibit

This year, the Santa Clara Valley Watercolor Society wants to give Willow Glen residents something to talk about with its 37th annual Member Show, "Conversation Pieces."

The exhibit aims to explore the many ways conversation is connected to art, including a dialogue between an artist and a viewer.

Willow Glen artists featured in the exhibit include mother-and-daughter painters Serena Murray and Jean Collet, Sayeko Nakamura, Carol Worthington-Levy and Richard Barrett.

Featuring one of the largest and most active artist memberships in the Bay Area, the Santa Clara Valley Watercolor Society encourages emerging artists as well as established and nationally recognized professionals.

"Conversation Pieces" runs from Aug. 28 through Sept. 24 at the Rose Shenson Gallery on the grounds of the Triton Museum of Art in Santa Clara. The gallery is open every day from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. For more information, visit www.scvws.org.

Myers, Foley running
for school-board seat

A little healthy competition is what citizens will have this election year when deciding who to choose to represent them as the trustee for Area 3 in the San Jose Unified School District.

San Jose Unified School District School Board incumbent Carol Myers, who represents Willow Glen schools, will be facing off against first-time candidate Pamela Foley. Myers ran unopposed in the last school-board election four years ago.

A lifelong resident of Willow Glen, Myers has been a member of the school board since 1990. If she is elected, this will be her fourth term.

A special-education teacher for 32 years, Myers said she intends to focus on special-education issues, building strong neighborhood schools and ensuring a reasonable allocation of desegregation money to neighborhood schools.

A resident of Willow Glen since 1990, Foley owns a mortgage brokerage, E.F. Foley and Co. Inc., on Hamilton Avenue in Campbell. Foley said she is confident that her strong business background and financial knowledge make her a qualified candidate.

She has one daughter, who is in the third grade at Hacienda science/environment magnet.

If elected, Foley says she intends to focus on "safety concerns" at the Willow Glen middle school and high school. She also said she wants to elevate the quality of Willow Glen schools so people living in the neighborhood will select local schools as their primary choice.

The school board elections will take place on Nov. 2.
