New owners buy Beavers, plan to keep eatery menu, theme same
By Beth Walker
Less than a year after Willow Glen business owner John Karamanos opened Beavers Bar and Grill as his latest incarnation of what was first Willow Glen Billiards and Brew and then The Glen, he's sold the establishment to new owners.

The new owners are Deirdre Hegarty, Florence O'Sullivan and Patrick O'Sullivan. Florence O'Sullivan is the co-owner of the Peacock Lounge on Homestead Road in Cupertino.

On July 28 the trio applied for a new alcohol license that would allow them to continue serving wine, beer and distilled spirits with food.

The new owners also submitted an application to the San Jose Planning Department for a conditional-use permit to stay open until 2 a.m. on Fridays and Saturdays—Beavers is currently open until 1:30 a.m. on those days—and to add entertainment and off-site parking, said San Jose planner Ed Schreiner.

Willow Glen Neighborhood Association President Helen Solinski said that the association's board is "definitely monitoring the late-night-hours issue and that adding more late nights could be a problem."

She said that five years ago when Beavers, then called Willow Glen Billiards and Brew, tried to get a conditional permit to stay open until 2 a.m., neighbors on Meredith and Blewett avenues made it clear that they opposed the request. At that time the restaurant was denied approval by the San Jose Planning Commission.

Solinski also added that she would like to see the business's name change. "I know people that have eaten there and loved the food but were offended by the menu," she said.

The application, submitted July 6, was incomplete and did not specify the type of entertainment or where the off-site parking would be located, Schreiner said. The owners will be required to hold community meetings before a public hearing, Schreiner added.

O'Sullivan said the plan is to keep Beavers Bar and Grill the same and not change its theme, name or menu.

O'Sullivan said the bar and grill at 1180 Lincoln Ave. would be "a mixture" of activities to attract "everybody."

A grand opening is planned for sometime in September after the new owners officially take over, he said.

O'Sullivan also verified that Karamanos is selling 100 percent of his interest in the business and will no longer be involved.

Willow Glen resident Francois DeVilliers said he has played pool at Beavers Bar and Grill once.

"But I'm less likely to take someone there because of the name," he said. "I think it's crass."

DeVilliers said he wished the place would go back to the way it was as Willow Glen Billiards and Brew.

"The place seemed to be busiest as the billiards room," DeVilliers said. "We need something pub-like in Willow Glen."

Jose Herrera, who works on Lincoln Avenue, said that Beavers Bar and Grill was "really happening on Friday nights. I took some of my clients there. They had good waitresses, good servers, good cocktails." The only fault Herrera found was that the pool tables were not level.

Len and Sue Logoff, who come to downtown Willow Glen to pick up take-out at Taiwan Restaurant, said they had never dined at Beavers or its previously named restaurants because they didn't like pool tables.

"The pool tables are keeping people out," said Len Logoff.

Approximately 50 emails were exchanged on the Willow Glen Neighborhood Association's elist last November before Beavers opened about concerns that the place would be like a Hooter's—a restaurant catering to an adult crowd, Solinski said. That same flurry of activity was not repeated at the news of the ownership change this month.
