Returning seniors lead Del Mar attack
By Kevin Sparrer
He's 6-foot and 200 pounds, has three years of varsity experience and was a first team all-league linebacker a year ago—and he's also known as Mike Howery.

Now Howery enters his senior year at Del Mar High School with a major role on his hands.

Howery will lead the defense for the Dons this fall and hopes his experience will help the Dons to a successful season. Howery will not only be on the defensive side this season, he will also be a key figure on the offensive line this year protecting the quarterback.

Senior Danny Hauff (5-foot-10, 170) is another three-year varsity starter for the Dons and an all-league linebacker. With Howery and Hauff, Del Mar has two experienced linebackers in the middle of the defense with some serious talent and the ability to stop the ball this season with great efficiency.

Johnny Daniels (6-foot-1, 170) will be heading up the offense at the quarterback position again this season. Del Mar has another all-league athlete in Daniels, who will be handling the pigskin with some serious skill this season. But Daniel won't spend all of his time handling the football. When the Dons are on defense, Daniels will drop into the secondary as a defensive back.

Del Mar has one returning junior to the varsity this season, a player who was good enough to earn a second team all-league running back spot as a sophomore on the varsity. Emmanuel Sellu (6-foot, 185) will be running the ball on offense and running it down on defense.

The Dons are coming off a winning league season when they finished second in the West Valley Division of the Blossom Valley Athletic League.

"Del Mar is looking to take the next step as a program and compete for a championship," said head coach Eric Buran. "Our goal as a team is to strive for consistency and the desire to compete at the highest level every day."

The Dons have 16 returning seniors this season, including the all-leaguers mentioned earlier. The rest of the seniors for Del Mar include: Jason Pollak (5-foot-6, 130) as a wide receiver and defensive back, Robert Danz (5-foot-7, 140) also a wide receiver and defensive back, Joe Blank (5-foot-7, 175) will be running the ball and be in the secondary as a defensive back, Spencer Bockus (5-foot-9, 140) will be chasing the ball on offense and defense as a wide receiver and defensive back, Randy Barnes (6-foot-1, 180) will join Bockus as a wide receiver and defensive back, Gerald Brown (6-foot, 205) will be running the ball and roaming the middle as a linebacker, Alex Hayton (6-foot-3, 205) will be a towering figure on the offensive and defensive lines, Anthony Brandon (5-foot-7, 195) will be in the trenches as a member of both the offensive and defensive lines, An Tran (6-foot, 200) is going to do everything he can to be part of the offensive wall and to break opposing walls as a defensive lineman, Jason Lacock (6-foot-4, 210) is going to be a pillar of strength in both the offensive and defensive lines, Greg Ware (6-foot, 145) will spend his time chasing passes as a wide receiver and a defensive back, Vince Langarica (6-foot-3, 210) will chase passes on offense and chase running backs on defense as a member of the defensive line and Darren Weigert (6-foot, 175) will be throwing his weight around as a tight end and delivering some powerful hits as a linebacker.

Del Mar will compete in the West Valley Division again this season and should figure among the league's contenders.
