There's a construction project under way at Willow Glen High School, and it's got nothing to do with the new synthetic turf on the football field.
No, it's girls tennis coach Don DuShane who is beginning a rebuilding project on the courts after losing six of 10 varsity players to graduation last spring.
"This year we have 18 players on the team with 10 on varsity," said DuShane of the Rams. "Of the 18, only 10 have any previous tennis experience. So we are again rebuilding."
The cornerstone of the construction project is team captain Yessenia Barraza, the only senior on the squad.
Junior Krista Pronge is playing in the No. 1 singles spot for the Rams this fall with sophomore Stephanie Tran at No. 2, Barraza at No. 3 and junior Diem Ly Vo at No. 4.
Sophomores Jeanette Sulay and Sandy Tat are teamed in the No. 1 doubles position. Sophs Camile Rivera and Kristen Davis are expected to play No. 2 singles, but Davis is sidelined with broken finger. In the meantime, sophomore Alex Troup is moving into her spot.
Juniors Kathleen Khuu and Kharlyn Encarnacion combine in the No. 3 doubles position.
The Rams play in the West Valley Division of the Blossom Valley Athletic League, and they opened the year Sept. 9 with a tough 4-3 loss to Yerba Buena. Pronge, Tran and Vo each won in singles play for Willow Glen.
The Rams were to be back in action on Monday against Del Mar and Tuesday against Andrew Hill and they will host Gunderson on Sept. 16, 3:15 p.m.
