Stick around—things may become pretty interesting in the second half of the field hockey season in the West Valley Division of the Blossom Valley Athletic League.

At least, the Willow Glen girls hope so. The Rams wrapped up the first half of the league season by sticking it to Sobrato 3-0 after tying Branham 1-1 in an overtime thriller.

The win and tie left the Rams 4-1-2 in the first half, and they enter the second half of the league season this week with sights set on contending for the division championship.

Willow Glen was to open second-half play at University in San Francisco on Oct. 12 and will host Presentation on Oct. 14, 3 p.m.

Seniors Jessica Chavez and Rachel Siehl and junior Caitlin Chaney each drilled goals to lead the Rams to the 3-0 shutout win over Sobrato last Thursday.

Chavez scored a first-half goal off an assist from senior Dana Samhouri to give the Rams the early lead in the game.

Chaney made it 2-0 in the second half with heads-up play when she "picked up a rebound off the goalie's pads about five feet from the goal and sent it into the back of the net," said Willow Glen coach Samantha Bates.

Siehl's goal later in the half sealed the win. Her goal came "off a shot

from the top of the shooting circle that went past the goalie," said Bates.

Two days earlier the Rams played a thriller against Branham.

"It was a really good game that went into overtime," said Bates. "The teams were evenly matched."

Senior center forward Mallory Stein scored the only goal of the day for Willow Glen. Samhouri and Siehl also played very well offensively, according to Bates.

The coach also praised the defensive efforts of senior Laura Black and sophomore Aracely Esquerra "throughout the game and in overtime."

"It is an intense sudden death period with the first team to score winning the game," said Bates of the overtime period that calls for a reduction 11 to seven players for seven minutes of play. "It was very exciting to watch."

Down the street at Presentation, the Panthers topped San Jose Academy in overtime 1-0. Senior Alison Wan scored off an assist from sophomore Bridget Moran in the extra period to break the scoreless tie and lift the Panthers to the victory.

Presentation, now 2-3-2 in the West Valley Division and 2-5-3 for the year, was to host Branham before traveling to Willow Glen on Thursday.

Rams net two wins

Junior Krista Pronge won twice at No. 1 singles to lead the Willow Glen girls tennis team to wins over Yerba Buena and Andrew Hill last week. The Rams are now 7-3 and in second place in the West Valley Division with four matches left to play.

"We had a great week," said Rams coach Don DuShane. "Both teams have beaten us at their place 4-3."

Willow Glen got a little revenge over the Warriors with a 5-2 win, then upset first-place Hill 6-1 on Thursday. The Falcons had taken a 9-0 record into the match.

"Having a healthy team with Kristen Davis back, and finding the right player combinations for the three doubles teams helped," said DuShane. Davis, a sophomore, had been sidelined with a broken finger.

Pronge won by default at No. 1 singled to lead a Willow Glen singles sweep against Yerba Buena. Soph Stephanie Tran won 6-2, 6-2 at No. 2 singles, senior Yessenia Barraza won 6-4, 7-5 at No. 3 and junior Diem Ly Vo won 6-2, 6-2 at No. 4.

The No. 1 doubles team of sophomores Jeanette Sulay and Sandy Tat nailed a 6-2, 6-4 victory.

Pronge came back with a 6-4, 7-5 win at No. 1 to lead another singles sweep against the Falcons. Tran won 6-2, 7-5 at No. 2, Barraza 7-5, 3-6, 6-4 at No. 3 and Vo 6-3, 6-2 at No. 4.

The Rams also won two of three doubles matches with Sulay and Tat winning 6-4, 6-1 at No. 1 and P.K. Luu and Kathleen Khuu winning at No. 3.
